Anyone ever just get sick of of the agency politics and the lack of opportunity to be hands on and truly creative? Has anyone walked away and started their own business or freelance?

Going freelance, starting a business or leaving the industry?

I think we all reach that point in our careers that we consider it. But not many of us have the courage to leave a staff job with a dental plan. And usually don’t go freelance or start their own business until they are let go ( via staff reductions of course) and are forced to. But u also reach a point in your career where you realize this industry offers no job security. And in fact when you reach a certain level you feel like there’s a target on your back. So my suggestion is to start doing freelance assignments with your own clients or even other agencies if you can while still employed full time. After hours. Lunch time. Weekends. And discreetly during the day. Start building relationships now. It will give you the best reassurance and confidence that you can in fact make it on your own. And one day obtain your own dental plan.

Well thought out, good to know I’m not crazy and good advice thanks

I basically have 2 full-time freelance gigs (one on-site in NY, the other remote from LA). It’s incredibly easy and not hard to juggle. When I was full-time I had 9 accounts and 20 people under me. Now I have 2 accounts and basically never go to meetings. And I make 2x what I made before.

I’d like this x3 times if I could

Yes. It ‘s way better. Worked at a huge agency for 2 decades. I make more money on my own with private clients and freelancing at many agencies. Keeps your work fresh and your wallet fat. Just don’t compromise on your day rate. Remember, you’re not getting any benefits. And they can’t do what you do.

I’m struggling with the same thing now. I keep thinking I should just get a partner and be a hired gun. Have you come to any conclusions?

I’m currently lowering my overhead costs and plan to try a blend of freelancing, consulting and starting to build a small independent shop over the next year or so. I’d happily take a pay cut of 50% to have freedom and a sense of longer term stability and sanity. Maybe it’s a pipe dream, but maybe not?

I did exactly that for exactly those reasons five years ago. It has been life changing. I feel more creative, capable, balanced and yes the money is (usually) better. I started preparing about six months before making the leap—securing a buffer fund, strengthening my network, etc. You have to have some hustle and resilience but then you are essentially your own boss. Only downside (other than dry periods) is now I am looking to flex in a direction that means full time again and I hear some recruiters consider long term freelancers as unhireable.

Really? I haven’t heard that. Usually I get pressure to go full-time after 4-5 months. Some agencies even have a cap on hours, so they try to convert you to FT or have to let you go for a quarter.

Not sure if anyone else deals with this, but I feel so inferior compared to my friends at medical school or those who went to Ivy post grads. I went straight to Accenture right after college and while I’m so grateful for having a good job, I just feel like I haven’t done enough and will never realize certain financial goals at the rate I’m going. The problem is I’ve never really been good at setting attainable goals and often get discouraged and feel as though I can never be “the high achiever”

Hi! I have two offers and I’m not sure what to do. One is with a small firm that serves as outside counsel to medical practices (leasing, employment issues and acquisitions are primary work load) and the other is in-house for a pharmaceutical company (managing outside counsel, vendor contracts, privacy). The firm pays much better (1800 hours, flexible wfh) but I feel like the experience in house would go further in becoming a GC down the road. Please help!

Hi fishes, I am currently working with a Top medical device Org but currently there is no learning & no scope of growth here. On the other hand I received a big offer from a startup, which is doing good in India. So my question is, is it a good step to move from a Big US MNC to an Indian Startup ( doing pretty well). Will my profile be hampered when working with startup?

I’m just throwing this out there and I think it might be a common thought. I’m a mom of two (ages 5 and 3) and work full time out of the house in government making $103K. Job is not flexible in that it’s 8-5 with an hour lunch break butt in chair in the office work. Zero options to deviate or work from home. I have a 30-40 minute commute each way. I’m tired of feeling like the rat race and like I’m just paying someone else to hang out with my children. Anyone else feel like that?
