Main benefit is work life balance.
There really isn’t much accountability in HR, so if you don’t really want to work hard, move up, learn or grow, and you don’t care whether or not you are respected, HR could be a good move. I know that all sounds really mean, but it’s true. No one respects HR people. But for particular life circumstances (family obligations or health issues that require time off/away) HR could be the right move.
One other thought that is good to keep in mind - if you’re moving from a revenue-generating role to a cost center, you sacrifice some job security. Again, might be worth it depending on what else is going on, but you have more pull (for raises and promotions, for example) if you’re in a role that makes the company money versus one that costs the company money.
If you want to sell your soul to the devil go to HR. You won’t work hard. You will put you head in the sand when it comes to problems. You will betray every confidence ever shared with you. You will ensure you job is the most important and gets a bonus while telling everyone else they didn’t contribute to the bottom line. You will speak horribly about the people you are supposed to promote and protect. You will fire too many good people and hire too many bad. You will never leave your office except to go to meetings with the csuite. You will never make time for actual employees. HR departments are full of self grandiosity and people who are so out of touch of reality of how to run a business or motivate employees it is laughable. Would be the last job on earth for anyone with a brain, heart or soul.
ooh someone at my agency is trying to do this! she’s just waiting for HR to hire someone to fill her current role, but that has been a couple of months...
Is it possible to consider a two step process? Shift to PR at an HR firm as an interim step? HR can be a complex (legal/reg) area to jump into cold.
