Smart. But you could also get a cheaper rent...
You pay an outrageous amount for rent if money is a concern to you
Get rid of my place, “move in with my parents” in Jersey, but use alternate travel each week to go to a todo inclusivo each week. I doubt that would be more than $300/night for say 12 nights a month. It’s about the same and it would cover food and drink? Plus I’d get the points. Brilliant??
I did it for about 6 months. It’s okay-ish.
I was paying $1500 in rent all in and was in cool cities for my project (Denver, Seattle, NYC) and so used alt travel to have my hotel paid for for the weekend sometimes other than traveling elsewhere. It was decent too since Citi Prestige has 4th night free so I was paying 75% of the cost for a 4 day weekend, then had 12% ROI from points, and ~4% from Credit card so was only paying 59% of the room rate every weekend essentially.
The biggest annoyance is storage. I lived with my parents and was able to store my stuff there but the part that sucked was not being able to see my friends, most people will not alternative travel as much as you think. Additionally, you’re not going to be able to date someone.
Other than that, I actually really enjoyed it. I thought it was pretty fun to go to all these different cities and see what it would be like “living” there. For food, I ended up staying at Residence Inn/Hyatt House type places so had a kitchen. I would go travel to cities where I had college friends and meet up with them.
Why all inclusive? Just alt travel. Plenty of places you can go on that budget
Have you ever thought of roommates? That could easily cut $1500 off of your rent and you'd have a nicer apartment (ie common area and maybe a balcony)
Thanks everyone. Yeah I just broke up with someone so I am looking to just have some fun for 6-12 months. I actually don’t have much stuff that’s worth anything to me. Nice furniture, but I can always sell that. All my pics, music etc in the cloud. Don’t have any watches or jewelry. So what else is there? And get this I just checked into it. I can sublet my apartment furnished and make about $1000 per month with min 6 month term. I think I’m going to do it! I never really liked the winter much anyways and I bet I can find someone who is trying to do an internship or 6 month course or something.
I think for clothes, I’ll just use a 2 suitcase system where I alternate every week and leave the entire case with someone to fluff and fold. I’ll bring my computer with me of course.
What am I missing? I’m really excited!!
It seems you have made up your mind to keep alt travelling ..my teammate used to do it..when it got too much she used to go to her parents house...another option for her was to stay back at client location and relax. Imo All weekends travels sounds fun but you will kind of start hating it later on..its like excessive of anything kills the fun about it for rest of the life..
One downside is I think my social life would be a bit tricky to manage. But I think I could coordinate with friends to meet me and I’m pretty social so I think I might be able to just make friends if I pick the right resorts. Also I’m thinking with the weather changing for the worse, it would be nice to go somewhere warm when I get on a plane. I haven’t done alternate travel before. Do we get taxed on the cost of the flights or something?
$3500 is not outrageous at all in NY.
What would you do with all your stuff? Put it in storage? Pain in butt
D2. I lived with roommates when I was right out of college. Loved it, but I’m a bit older now and just over it. Feels like that would be going backwards. It’s not that I’m trying to save money per se. I’m just trying to have an experience that has a similar cost to what I’m doing now if that makes sense. I’m basically thinking I would get more value personally out of my “rent” payment if I just used it differently. And it would be a time in my life where I did something kind of different and exciting. Assuming I settle down at some point in the next 10 years and lose the ability I do something like this, it might be a cool adventure
I’ve done this for a few months now - one thing that is important to note is that you always need to plan ahead. There is no “default” weekend plan where you can just go back to your apartment - even going to stay with your parents requires getting a different ticket, making sure they’re there that weekend, etc.
Sometimes work gets hectic and on Wednesday night I realize that I haven’t figured out where I’m going that weekend! I would definitely recommend planning a few weeks in advance.
What if you get on a local project?
Assume getting a non local project is not an isshe
It becomes a drag not having a place to put your things. Even if you stay at the same hotel you don’t really have storage
Really? I have a studio in Murray hill. It’s not that extravagant
Check the alt travel policy about working internationally, if you are thinking about it. If you’re not charging any client work on Friday’s you should be fine then?
Many of us do this in Asia, without a home address apart from the office
There is some service that stores all your clothes and then ships what u want to your hotel. then u ship back, they wash, ...repeat
Get out of the city bcg. I’m going to check into that
