In CA there are QDRO attorneys and the one I’ve worked with charges a flat fee

In CA there are QDRO attorneys. When we were finalizing a Judgment, we’d just get the parties agree to use a QDRO attorney.

Flat fee. General family practitioners complain about doing them, but more often than not the plan administrators are really helpful.

Flat fee all the way!

How do some partners have hundreds of unread emails in their inboxes? Granted we are a small firm with a copy everyone on everything policy— but when our principal misses something, the excuse is always: I have 700+ unread emails. Umm… if everyone is copied on everything, I manage to have zero unread before I shut down for the day, boss. 🤷‍♂️

Billing question - Do you have clients pay an outstanding balance within 30 days of sending out your account or earlier? New attorney here! Currently, I’m a child advocacy lawyer, but I want to get into family law (divorce, custody, etc.). I’m constantly advised to steer clear of family law; but is it really THAT bad??

What are people’s thoughts/feelings on the out-of-office/auto-reply when an atty’s attention is focused on one matter (I.e. “I’m in a full day hearing, so my response will be delayed”). My initial reaction was: you’re not really out. You’re still doing your job, your job at the time just happens to be exclusively one case.

HYPOTHETICAL: Your divorce client found what is likely very illegal drugs in their spouse’s suitcase (they innocently borrowed the suitcase). There’s no legitimate chain of custody here for an arrest. How would you use this in the custody case? Would you simply have police pick it up from your office and fill out a report (knowing they won’t test the substance for a definitive conclusion)? The type of presumed drug exits the system within 4 days so a court ordered drug test may be useless.
