They normally look for candidates with a background in math, physics, MIS, CS, etc. generally right from undergrad or MS/PhD. Tough to break into later in career (especially from a soft skills role like consulting).

Yeah I tried doing this not long ago and same experience (had one interview at a buy side fund but didn’t make it very far) - those jobs require a very specific skill set and it seems that I’ve just become less sharp at my math the more I stayed in consulting. I ended up applying to a MS/MFE that places decently well into those roles. Hoping that would shift the tides a bit, but at the same time PhD might be better off ... kind of regret not further pursuing my math degree after undergrad. I enjoyed it far more than my time in consulting

It’s true if you don’t get into finance right out of school, it’s hard to get in later. Many go MBA for a second shot at this path
True but you can get into trading from Mba. Point being it’s hard to pivot if you didn’t get in right out of school
