Me! Every time I meet a friend I go with 2-3 tops to give away. I send them a heads up message like this and if they’re okay with it, I give it to them.
“So this year, I’m trying to make sustainable choices with my clothes. Every time I meet a friend, I give away a piece of clothing I haven’t worn in a while. These are great clothes/some of my favorites, but I’m just not wearing them very much and they deserve a better home. They’re in great condition and ofcourse, free. I just want to keep them going instead of throwing them away or donating to a charity which also throws them into landfill in 3rd world countries. I can send you pictures of them before we meet. Any chance you’d be interested?”

My friends and I do clothing swaps all the time, and we’ve been doing it for several years, so it’s not unusual to see a piece you’ve brought to one swap show up again a year or two later! It’s a great way to refresh your closet without spending a ton. Everything that doesn’t get taken by someone gets donated to women/family shelters, organizations that prep women for white-collar jobs (like Suited for Change), etc. Lots of those orgs here in the DC area.
OP, I try to purge my closet once or twice a year and then take everything to a local women’s shelter. The women at the shelters have sometimes had to leave everything they own to escape an abusive relationship and are starting over with nothing.
They should come up with a google search! Some have an “office” location with a separate location where the actual shelter is.
Can I take your extra clothes lol, still new in my career and trying to build my closet
Love a great clothing swap among friends! Also this keeps popping up if it’s something g you want to consider: https://www.instagram.com/reel/Cjxi86ejLpB/?igshid=NzNkNDdiOGI=

The very best way to take care of this is to buy less.

Absolutely. Minimalism is an art and makes life better. I wish I could be a better minimalist

One purge method I used was when I was packing for a 4 month trip. I emptied a closet in a guest room, and moved into that closet the items I loved and wore frequently. I even tried on every item and took a photo of me in it to check that it actually looked good. I moved about 20% over. From there I packed one suitcase which I lived out of for spring and summer. There were still things I didn’t wear.
The 80% remaining was intended for donation. I couldn’t bring myself to get rid of all of it but I’d say a good half of it went. Some of it I kept because I think I could sell it or it had some nostalgic value. 6 months later it’s all still there. Maybe this time I’ll actually purge it
I organise flee market together with friends

ThredUp is great! They’ll give you a label to send your clothes in, they list them for you and you make a % of purchase if they’re sold, and if they don’t sell they’ll donate them for you to charity (complete with tax form). If you want them returned, they do that too

I do a first pass for a friend and then a second pass for donations. It helps to only buy sustainable/ long lasting clothing.

Man I wish I had this problem 😅
Gap has great tall stuff. I have a long torso and my 25 yo has a 36 in inseam (so annoying--I have stubby legs so need tall tops and petite pants and will never join the romper revolution). We both find things we like there often.
I have the same issue! I have purged many times because of moves but I’m still left with a closet overflowing!

Rent the runway subscription. It stopped me from buying clothes.
I have hosted clothing purge/swap parties in the past and everyone brings items, if someone wants something, great they get a new item or two. The rest we take to the charity store/donation.
There are many options though. Given too much landfill and waste, look for textile recycling sites in your area. Here’s an option: https://fordays.com/pages/how-we-recycle

💯
I recently cut my clothes from college down by ~70% by re-selling them and replaced half of it with newer pieces. I also donated. Re-selling is not a quick process, it took a year plus, but it was a great low effort way to slowly clean out your closet overtime and even make some of the money back.

Did you find selling online was worth the effort. Consignment is a bit better if they take it, I put credits towards more stuff though :)
No. I have too little clothes. I’ve been gaining so much weight over the years, I keep buying clothes and in a couple of months can barely fit them. I’m tired of the cycle so now I just wear the same 5 outfits every week. 😓😭😪
And I hate shopping.
