CONS: I feel isolated. Do not feel upper management has visibility or even cares about my project/work. There's no one to bounce ideas off of. No one to hang out with and bitch about the project. No mentorship. No guidance. Everything is self paced so you could work all the time.
PROS: Overall you can be healthier. Can eat better and on your own schedule. Can sleep and take naps. Can go to the gym regularly. Get to see friends and family more. If you are single you can date regularly and with greater emphasis on long term.
@a1 sums it up pretty well
What helps is making sure to create your own routine, and making social plans a regular thing. If you're someone able to do that, you'll be happy with remote because you'll feel in control of your life.
I have been remote for weeks on end over here. Its rpic for the reasons A1 mentioned
Do you guys feel like it's helped or hurt your social life? Most of the people who I know that have done remote are married and have spouses that also work remote or are home with kids. I'm single and am afraid that I'm going to feel super isolated working alone out of my apartment every day
Depends on the week, but generally there's more flexibility. For example, I've been able to go to a yoga class at 2pm before just because I didn't have meetings around that time. I've also sometimes started working at 10am if my calendar permitted lol. And I've also made dinner plans and taken hours away and then come back and continued working. I've liked having the ability to make my own schedule. It's of course not always like what I've described – but I've tried to take advantage of things as much as possible. As you were saying about getting lonely? I over book myself to be social because I CAN if that makes sense
gained weight, worked my ass off on remote project. the novelty of working remote and not traveling wore off after 2 weeks. got back on the road, lost all of the weight in 2 months.
Can you not go into a local office?
Conversely, I love the idea of being able to go visit friends and family whenever I want without having to take PTO or get prior approval from a manager
@Op - I have been dating regularly and meeting up with friends regularly. You have to be a bit more proactive but it can totally be a good thing for your social life.
Interesting. I've been remote for months, and it's been fine. I go into the local office so I get to see people! Definitely allows you to be more social. For example, you can easily go to the gym, make dinner plans, and be a relatively normal human and work around your life.
Thanks for your responses! Do you guys have roughly the same work schedule or is there more flexibility?
Too flexible. You need to be very well disciplined. Especially if people you interact with are in different time zones. Set boundaries.
Sounds like the dream A2. I love working but hate feeling like I'm stuck traveling to the same city and working the same hours. Definitely going to look into remote
