IVF is tough - high cost (unless you have amazing insurance), demanding on work schedule lots of hormones, lots of emotions, etc. Insurance may not cover it unless you have diagnosis of infertility, too.
If you have a family reason to suspect a need for genetic testing (e.g., both have family history of cystic fibrosis or another recessive genetic disease), it could be worthwhile. If you’re worried about Down Syndrome, the odds are pretty low (and the accuracy of PGS isn’t any better than that of first-trimester genetic testing. If you’re just worried that you and your husband may randomly carry some disease - well - virtually everyone is a carrier for one or two recessive diseases and the odds that you and husband have same ones are pretty low.
In short - I wouldn’t do it unless you have strong reason to believe you have heightened genetic risk or unles you are already doing IVF for infertility.

Before jumping to IVF, you could. Org do genetic screening. Something like 23&me will test a handful (and you can identify more if you know how to read the raw sequencing data from their work); medically prescribed panels like Counsyl) could be a much less invasive step to see if either of you are carriers and identify things which might justify IVF rather than the old-fashioned way to conceive.
Pretty regular procedure with IVF they check for Down syndrome etc. - standard stuff. Get it done.
We just started IVF, but had the genetic screen through myriad done on us before we did IUI. Easy blood test for us and they are going to do the genetic testing on the eggs when we do IVF.
A good friend had multiple miscarriages due to genetic issues (wasn’t on the same gene with each miscarriage) and she went through IVF to avoid the genetic issues-she and her husband have a beautiful, healthy daughter from IVF and is about to deliver a second happy surprise next month without IVF.
Thanks so much for sharing this and that’s great to hear! I am so sorry your friend and her husband went through what they did, but I am so happy to hear their good news.
