Anyone grow up with an absent/deadbeat father? Is it possible to be successful with that upbringing?

It’s possible to be successful with almost any upbringing. There’s no one size fits all to success, it’s reductive to dilute your ability succeed in life to having 2 parents, 1 parent, or no parents. That doesn’t mean different situations don’t make it easier or harder to succeed

Yup, my dad was in and out of jail. And yes, it is possible to be successful with that upbringing. Don’t let your past define you. Especially since it is out of your control

This is a story of two brothers. One was a drug addict and a drunkard who frequently beat up his family. The other one was a very successful businessman who was respected in society and had a wonderful family. People wanted to find out why two brothers from the same parents, brought up in the same environment, could be so different.

When asked why they became the way they are today, they both said “My father.”

Both were deriving their strength and motivation from the same source, but one was using it negatively and the other positively…

my son’s father is non existent in his life. my son is wildly successful in the USAF…yes, it is possible

like

he wishes.

haven’t seen his dad in over 30 years.

it’s his loss because he grown ups to be an awesome young man.

You may start a little behind the starting line and probably need some therapy but outside of that- yes.

like

Yes I did and my brothers and I are doing great despite what everyone said (my parents had some trash friends, they all assumed we would fail ☹️). My mom worked her ass off to make sure we understood the importance of having a desire for success, so we definitely owe the motivation to her. My dad wasn't a bad man but he wasn't a great one either.

like

I grew up a waif and raised my brother and sister. Plus, I was a teen mom. It's absolutely possible.

uplifting

Yes, could also be helpful. I have seen wildly successful people emerge from bad parents. Quite a motivator to some.

Physically and emotionally abusive father. I’ve never heard I love you from him. 90% of his words to me were criticisms. Eventually abandoned us financially too. Cut him out of my life once I left home because he never stopped being toxic. The drive to ‘make’ it so I could be independent and not have to take the abuse fueled me.

High performer in my job, making 200k+, graduated a top 5 MBA, living in a major city in the US (came to the US on my own). Have a great circle of friends and community. Generally pretty happy

like

Yes

Yes, my son will grow up to work for Deloitte.

Yeah man. Take all those feelings of inadequacy that you have bc your dad never loved you, and let them drive you to succeed.
Worked for me.

Well I had a father who paid for rent and just enough food so we didn't die.

I wouldn't say he was present though. I don't think he ever asked me a single question about myself from age 2- 24.
My mother is also mentally ill so that was fun.

I make 200k+ now, but I'm not happy. I guess I'm successful but it sure was exhausting and time consuming to get here without any parental guidance. I also think it was mostly luck.

I always love the saying “chance favors the prepared mind”.

There may have been some luck but when the opportunity arose you recognized it.

Give yourself some credit

Parents divorced when I was 12. I had a charismatic but neglectful father. It will always be with you but doesn’t have to affect your successes in life. Of all the things I’ve done well, I’ve been a terrific father to three now adult kids, a good husband, respected by my peers, and have had a good career. I chose to sacrifice bigger dollars for much more time with family.

My mom was kind of neglectful too but never a bad mother. That took longer to sort out. I had some good role models though, and married a great person (just celebrated 41 years - married young).

You’ll be fine. Look for examples of terrific people and leaders and parents to guide you. And your 🐟 family of course :-)

About three weeks ago people stated posting summer get together pics and she didn’t comment on any of them. And then another classmate posted a Muslim holiday post…no comment. And she always comments on those. Continue:
