Anyone have a bad experience with being retained by a firm? Got an offer but I really do want to stay because of the culture and group/transfer. Originally sought the offer to see what I was worth.

You have only been with your firm for a year and haven't been there long enough to be considered super valuable unless you are a key member of a high priority project. You shouldn't have been looking unless you were ready to leave. You were hired a year ago which also means your salary is already pretty competitive.

You should just take the offer. They won't get into a bidding war for a first year. Also you will pretty much burn your bridge with the other firm if you got all the way to the offer stage and then decline. People don't like to waste their time.

Welcome.

I guess I should clarify. Got an offer with another firm and debating on leaving but would like to stay if I can get a higher salary

So many variables OP. Level? Experience? Background? Sales? Network? Strength of network, and what level? How well did your group perform? Vertical? Horizontal? Etc...

SA, one year of consulting, almost 10 of industry, engineering/MBA, medium strength of network. Might be switching verticals. MC horizontal.

Honestly another reason I seemed other opportunities was for a personal reason. My wife stays at home with the kids so a single income in a big city is very taxing. With student loans on top of that and I need some breathing room! But that's what I'm debating on, A1. If I should ask or just leave.

Why not stick with the firm but move to lower COL city?

My practice isn't in many low COL cities. I'm probably in the lowest one.
