Are there rescue goldens? All I ever see is pit bulls and little things my husband does not consider to be canine.
DC area rescue organizations get a bunch of really great and adoptable dogs. They might not be pure bred golden retrievers but there’s certainly tons of wonderful dogs that aren’t pit bulls. Wolf trap animal rescue is good for people looking for puppies
I got my Golden in 2016. He came from Laurelridge Goldens in MD in 2016. The owner is Cheryl Dunkin, she is super old school, no website/social media - but word gets around and her litters fully claimed before birth.
Cheryl has a gorgeous country home where she raises all her Goldens with her husband. Her personal family Goldens are the picture of perfect obedience and so sweet. Cheryl was lovely and let me visit 3 times during the period after birth before I took my pup home. She always followed proper protocol about what age the pups had to be before I could touch them. She did a temperament test on all pups and matched us with our preferences based on that. My boy is now 4 and he is exactly the temperament I asked for, zero health problems.
She is an ethical breeder and was previously head of the area Golden Retriever Club for many years. She is not a backyard breeder or a puppy mill AT. ALL. She is a career professional that cares deeply for her dames and protects their health. Her dogs are confirmation champions which means she’s breeding healthy, strong dogs that confirm to the breed standard and are recognized as such. I didn’t care about a show dog, I cared about a healthy dog who was ethically bred.
I was actually referred to her by the local GRC club as a breeder of the highest standard. She’s an official AKC breeder of merit, does all health testing and certifications and will provide those to you for the mother and father. This is key and how you can be sure you’re dealing with a serious breeder.
My pup was ready right at the holidays and I knew with my travel plans, bringing home a new puppy would not be ideal as my schedule would be all over the place, traveling to family’s house. Cheryl kept my pup an extra 3 weeks (11 weeks old) until I could bring him home. She texted me photos of him during that time and it was so awesome to see how loved and adored he was. We stayed in touch afterwards and shared photos regularly.
She did crate and house training with him during that time. It was incredible, save for a couple minor accidents, he was house trained by the time he got to me. He never fought his crate and went in like a champ.
With all her puppies, she does great amounts of socialization activities which means you take home a confident, well adjusted, happy puppy who is okay with nail trims, brushing, loud noises, vacuum, etc etc. All really important for a well adjusted dog.
Sorry for the long post, I just feel very strongly about this breeder and the choice to use an ethical breeder and all the benefits I experienced.
Here’s my baby on his birthday :)
Puppy spam! He came home with me right before we got that huge blizzard in NOVA in January 2016.
Let’s please get on board with adopt don’t shop
SM2, just like not everyone buys used underwear, not everyone wants a used dog.
Dunkeld goldens in richmond if you want a reputable, health focused breeder. The guy is a veterinarian still practicing. Obv rescue great option too but if not these are good people and not a puppy mill or backyard breeder.
Weird - didn't know there were rescue organizations that favor certain breeds (esp ones that aren't typically strays like pit bulls)
