Anyone have a learning disability and has tips on how to overcome limitations at work /studying for the cpa? Been a challenge matching the pace of coworkers, but don’t want to make excuses for myself.

@Senior Assurance Associate 1 - Yes, it's a competitve world, but there is room for everyone. You don't just cut those with a disability out of engagements, that's not the way it works. And, btw, it's against the law.

like

@OP based on the different reactions from me vs SAA1, you can see there are different types of senior associates out there. Hopefully you get one who is more understanding of your issues and can help you succeed. SAA1 sounds like an asshole with statements like “my budget has no room for disability”. I pray you work for someone more understanding than that. Budgets are an artificial construct anyways

likeuplifting

If you continuously churn out good work without sacrificing quality, people will appreciate it. Maybe tell someone you trust on your team so they can understand your issue. Just make sure you’re not measuring yourself against others unrealistic expectations. One of my senior managers def had ADHD, but he still managed to be a CPA, CFA, and MBA from a top school. He did work at his own pace, but he was smarter than everything despite his distracting ways

like

Also, I feel like it is a confidence issue. One of my closest friends at work has ADHD and she’s super smart, but doubts her abilities since she takes a little longer to get through things. Everything she does is well thought out and actually more efficient because she happened to think 10 steps ahead.

@associate1. Thanks for the advice. I’ve tried to compensate by staying after hours and essentially practicing by doing mock work papers ( I know it sounds lame), as well as building relationships with the people I’m working for so I can be more comfortable in expressing the challenges I’m facing. Overall everyone I work for knows I care about my work product and getting better, just need to find a way to provide value in other areas

like

What’s the disability? And i feel like most people have another strength they can use to compensate the disability with

like

No offense but if I was your manager and you were giving me 3/4 results, my budget has no room for disability. It's a competitive world we've chosen to be apart of. Excuses of any sort are not permitted.

like

Just make sure your management / senior on the team knows about your disability. It’s not fair to them if they are writing your reviews and they don’t know the whole picture of why you might be slow. Letting them know will hopefully also make them prepare better so that they are not giving you rushed deadlines

like

Like MA1 said, let them know. I have an associate I work with a lot that has on and off health issues like migraines. I try to keep that in mind when giving her work and another one that does good work but you really have to take the time to explain things to her. If you just say SALY and walk away your not going to get what you expect but she’s completely fine with the upfront coaching. Teams and work product reflect leadership - there are a lot of PAs that are good at taking direction or individual initiative but not very good at leading or developing those under them.

like

With out getting into too much detail, pretty much ADHD, a slower processing speed that makes it difficult to process information. Takes much longer to finish tasks without sacrificing quality in my work. During non busy season, I tend to be fine because things aren’t as time sensitive and I can go at my own pace.

like

(2) But during busy season, things completely unravel, and my work quality suffers because I’m trying to rush things to meet deadlines from seniors, but feel bad because I’m letting them down and they end up just fixing the mistakes themselves . Z

like

Staff, highly dyslexic also with slower processing speed.... I passed the CPA exam! I recommend applying for extra test time if you qualify. My study tip would be study your way. For me I used Becker and watched every video but did not actually read the book. Studying is hard and yes your disability will make it harder, but you will feel unstoppable once you pass, good luck!

like

As for busy season work, that’s when I get my only negative feedback about the speed. Ik it’s because working in an audit room is hard for me (I need a second screen and very little background noise to work my best). I worry that if my senior knew I was dyslexic the small mistakes I make whether they be from being new, working fast, simply being human or my disability, they would be noticed more, and I would risk being viewed as the liability I’m not.

like

I believe that my brain being wired differently, and the empathy I have due to my disability benefits my teams more than a few extra hours harm the budget. I hope to be on team in the future with a senior or manager who I feel comfortable asking for simple accommodations (ex. working part time in a quieter space at the client or from the office...). Until then I keep doing my best because I love audit and I look forward to becoming a senior/manager/partner who enables my teams without needing to know the specifics of their (dis)abilities.

If u truly have disability, aren’t there special circumstances for test and prep?!?

SAA1 should be ashamed of his statement.
