Anyone have a partner verbally “guarantee” promotion to you and not have that come through? Been around long enough not to trust many people, but they only did so when I said I was leaving the firm

The only partner that can guarantee your promotion is the CEO of your business unit I. E head or audit, tax etc. If a line partner or office managing partner makes that statement , beware

I had a partner give me a verbal job offer and lied to my face. Trust no one.

Tax Advisor 1 - I was asked to move to make partner too and declined. I made it in NYC the next year as opposed to Houston, Texas. As my wife said to me when they offered me to move, “Wow, that commute is going to suck for you.” I have been a partner now 13 years, one piece of advice, if you can, if you are offered to move and have no intention of moving blame your spouse or significant other. Firms will generally not force you to do something that will ruin your marriage. Also shut it down early as as soon as they see you in role it can hard to move them off that. Sorry about your friend. That really sucks

Ive seen it many times. I cringed when I saw a partner guarantee a promotion in exchange for the employee moving his family to a different city. I never trusted anyone after that. People lie all the time in this industry.

My partner made good on his promise. Glad i stuck with him.

D2 is right. Always get it in writing. Saw this happen in my office

So they guarantee you’ll get promoted when you told them you were leaving? Why are you leaving in the first place? If it’s a bigger issue than promotion or salary, don’t stick around for that.

Follow the old adage “get it in writing”.

Pwc2 - there are non-financial reasons I’m leaving, which would need to be addressed as well, a lot to do with office politics. In terms of a financial reason I bring up promotion because if I were to assume promotion this year the bump in my salary +bonus + my retention bonus becomes equivalent with my open offer with the other firm, so if I were to get okay with the non-financial reasons, it would make me think about staying.

OP - what level promotion? Senior Manager to partner or senior to Manager, etc? Also would it have been considered an early promotion? fact is very few partners and only those in Senior leadership can guarantee a promotion. To me the more troubling aspect is when it didn’t happen why that partner didn’t sit down with you and explain why and have others circle the wagon around you to keep you happy.

Tax Advisor 1 - that is one you need to get in writing but EY in my experience is generally pretty good on making good on those promises when a move is involved. Every circumstance is different but those I would certainly try and get in writing

EY1 - promo is from manager to director. Not early promo, already had my director plan approved by group. Have a few meetings lined up with senior leadership over next few days to try to convince me to stay.

The promotion didn’t happen and the individual left the firm soon thereafter. I was asked to move and declined.

OP - I am sorry to hear this for you. Obviously I have no idea why you were passed over. If they have lined up leadership for you to meet with to stay happy then they do like you and likely something happened with the numbers/finances somewhere. I know that doesn’t right your wrong. Good luck with where you get to on this. As I have said before and will say again, no one will manage your career better than you. So go manage, with good luck and G-d speed Op!

EY 1 - sorry for miscommunication wasn’t passed up for promotion, promotion at Pwc happens in July. I was going through promotion process, when I decided to pursue offers elsewhere.

Sorry for my misunderstanding. Good luck to you!

Not a promotion, but a rotation abroad...

Unfortunately you cannot trust most partners on verbal unless they are regional business line leadership who have the authority to make decisions.

The only thing you can trust the leadership in your firm to do is what is best for them. If it happens to work out for you, then good but it's only because it provided an advantage to them.

14 months into my first agency job and I’ve been told from my CDs that I’ve been recommended for a raise. What should I ask for? I’m making 58k now and have had a bunch of work produced.

Manager 1. Transfer from audit into FDD (and have to do one more busy season in audit), or leave to a financial reporting job at a large public co for 40% raise?

Question— do you share your comp with close friends? Me and my roommate have been friends forever and while I don’t really share my specific pay, Im not sure if I should share it with her. When she got promoted she told me her comp tho I didn’t ask. Today I found out I was promoted (🎉) and left that part out. She asked me if I knew what my raise would be and I just told her the % but not the actual amount. Is that unnecessarily secretive? We’re in diff industries too.

I’m in my mid twenties and feel like work is my life. I think I’ll be satisfied with six figures for a while, which I’d be pretty close to after my raise in October anyways, and 40 hour work weeks.
