Yep. And yep. I’ll go for walks on the weekend without my work phone, and it’s on silent at 10 pm unless I have reason to expect an emergency. Times I get to unplug are still limited, but it’s nice to get some time to myself.

Yes, I have a second phone. The ability to leave it behind and to have my work stuff completely separate from my personal stuff is worth the hassle of carrying two phones around. My work phone goes on “Do Not Disturb” from 11pm-7am which helps unplug a bit in the evening, unless there is something urgent.

Absolutely have a second phone. Don’t pollute your personal phone with work things! Besides the whole separation of work and life thing you’ve already mentioned, do you really want to hand your personal phone over to be cloned if you get subpoenaed and need to be searched? Because that happens sometimes, and even if nothing embarrassing gets turned over a junior at your office will have reviewed your stuff and now knows things about your personal life you’d rather they didn’t. Carrying two phones is a small price to pay for maintaining your privacy.
Depending on what the discovery is about that second phone might have to be turned over as well.

I used to have a second phone for work and mostly just found it inconvenient to have to have both on me all the time
Seconded. I wanted to keep my personal life and professional life separate but it was just too inconvenient to have two phones on me all the time. Ended up porting my personal number to the company phone and using one.

I do have a second work phone but tbh so far it hasn’t really helped to compartmentalize. It probably depends on the firm. If yours is the kind of firm that expects virtually 24/7 availability the number of devices will make zero difference.
I have a second work phone because my v35 firm has a policy where they area allowed to remotely wipe your entire phone if you lose it. If it’s a firm plan they most likely have their own security policies and concerns.
Yup, since you have to install all the firm's security stuff to get access to email, I figured I'd rather have that on a totally separate device so they can't remote wipe my personal device
I don’t have a second phone because I like to travel light, but I do have “work apps” (like mail and MS Teams) and “personal apps” (like Gmail and Google voice). I’ll turn off notifications for one set or the other or both if I want to disconnect. That’s enough for me.
Yes to second phone. It doesn’t ring at night. I won’t drunkenly text the wrong person. Leave it when I’m out for walks and exercise. It’s great.
I have a separate work phone. Honestly, keeps it simple when I’m traveling internationally and need to work as I know the plan covers it with one email to my IT. Also, I know this isn’t the purpose but my work phone is a lot nicer than my personal phone so I can take amazing photos on it and transfer it immediately after. (And I get that this is not what it’s supposed to be used for, but so many associates do it anyway.) Also, because I’m not a huge phone person, at least work stuff doesn’t waste battery life and space, so I don’t have to replace my personal phone as often. I just keep my work phone on me at all times, so it doesn’t otherwise matter for my life, but I still like having the two separate.
So when I traveled to Europe for vacation, the firm turned on International roaming for me even though I expected (and got) zero emails or calls during the trip. It’s really nice and convenient not to have to worry about any phone bills.
Those of you who have second phones, is that something your firms pay for or does that have to be considered a personal expense?
Aa1: I really lucked out bc that same year the firm started offering a "LIFE stipend" basically reimbursing $1500 or so rather than raising salaries, so I also got to update my personal device from a Samsung galaxy s6 (or so) to a 10e
Do not have a separate work phone but my phone is on silent.
Definitely have a second phone. 1. Compartmentalization/mental health, and 2. Firm refuses to upgrade the piece of shit they gave me when I joined in 2015. Also I don’t like the idea of all of my personal conversations and photos sitting on a piece of firm-owned equipment.
Has anyone here had to make the case to your firm or company to pay for the second phone? How did you approach that? It sounds nice, but also hesitant to get a second phone if I have to pay for it myself
I have friends who don’t ask for a company-paid phone because they don’t want to have to respond to emails 24/7. If that’s not the expectation already, I wouldn’t do it either. If that is already the expectation, well then that’s what you say when you ask for the phone.
If you don’t want to carry two phones and you have an eSIM compatible phone, see if they’ll activate your work line on the eSIM. I just did that on my iPhone and, although a couple things are clunky (if you click a link to a phone number it’ll auto dial from your default line) I am very happy to have just one phone.
Yes and honestly I treat it like an “office phone” unless I am traveling, it will remain on my desk (WFH). I will take it with me even if I go the night to my boyfriend but otherwise it doesn’t go into my purse. The opposing side in my line of work is always the government so I know I won’t get any late night message or urgent, late calls.
I will check it once or twice in the evening but I am not constantly looking at it. It helps with setting boundaries
