Agree with Attorney 1 - you’ll have to take a pay cut but it’ll be totally worth it. I switched to T&E last year as a 2nd year in cap markets. Couldn’t be happier with the switch. Do whatever you can to learn the field and show an interest (attend relevant CLEs, start following tax and T&E news, sign up for law firm practice group alerts, etc.). It’s obviously easier if your current firm has a T&E group you could switch to, but not impossible to make the switch to another firm.
It’s not too late! You’ll take a pay cut to switch groups but your life will be SO much better.
I don't know how to tell you to make the switch but my first boss was the chair of real estate department and a large regional firm and when his dad who was a T&E lawyer passed away he just stepped in and took over his dad's practice. Had no experience doing T&E. He just found some other guys who did it and kind of learned on the job.
Thanks everyone! Any thoughts on how I can approach my current firm / what to say?
A2 has the right idea. If you switch firms, you may need to reset as a first year. Are you willing to do it?
It’s definitely NOT too late. Switch now before you spend too much time elsewhere!
