Anyone have advice for dealing with overbearing managers? I’m stretched thin on three different engagements and am feeling anxious about the criticism(some constructive, some not) I am getting from a particular manager. Most of the other managers I work with communicate more sporadically and are pretty kind. I feel like I’m under the microscope on this particular engagement.

It’s all about adapting to what their used to. Did they have the same complaints about the work last year? Get an idea of what happened in py and what can be improved. do your best to execute and communicate to them what your doing and how it is being adapted to what they’re looking for. If they are still micromanagey start to involve them more at each step. At each step make sure you’re adapting to what they need as the default. Deviate from the default only if a constraint on the process requires you to do so. Make sure to communicate the constraint and deviation with them. Basically plan each step with them and discuss the obstacles in the process then execute. I’ve had to do this before with similar managers. It’s kind of a grueling process but it helps to show them that you can be trusted in delivering what they are expecting. At the end of it the two of you should be a great team. If not it’s probably toxic.

Has anyone else really struggled with compulsion and anxiety/doing things impulsively? My entire life I’ve always gotten away with doing things by the skin of my teeth and feeling a rush from getting away with things. For example, it started with waiting until the last second for assignments and still getting decent grades. As a 24y/o I feel it’s manifesting in toxic ways and I’m now stretching myself to my last dollar or being compulsively late just to feel that rush. I think I need help.

Trying to decide to put myself first or help out my family.
I’m currently working remote elsewhere and told the fam I’d come home to pet sit for a week. If then stay a month or two for the holidays. I met someone out here and want to stay longer to give it a shot but also don’t want to bail on family commitments.
I also moved home for a year in Covid to help them out and paid rent. I love them but I’m 26 and need to start putting myself first. Am I being a dick?

What would you do? I was recently reached out to by an exec I worked for at another agency. He’s at a new agency and looking for an EA to assist him, the new president and another exec. However the agency itself is not doing well- no new biz wins, big layoffs recently, terrible reviews on Glassdoor. I like my current agency enough, however, very much don’t like the 2 execs I assist. Would you go rather work for good execs at a bad agency? Or stay at a decent agency but awful execs?
