Anyone have advice on how to get their adult rescue dog to like (or even tolerate) a carrier or doggy tote bag? He hates anything “confining” including harnesses, bandanas, blankets, and hugs. We really need him to get used to a bag for subway and car purposes but he gets stiff as a board, and bolts the second he can. We’ve tried leaving it out to get used to, treats, placing him in and giving high value toy or treats, and he still hates it.

Find a high value treat and make that the treat that he only gets in his carrier. My dog loves Kraft singles. I only use those for training sessions and car rides.

Alright then there you go.

If you have some time to browse YouTube, the show It's Me or the Dog has some clips on dogs who for example are terrified of vacuums. They use a similar idea for those dogs - treats and praise around the vacuum. Eating treats off of the vacuum. Etc.

She is a positive method trainer, which is perfect for fear issues and things like this.

Do like you would do with crate training and feed him all his meals in the carrier

I agree with M1, such great advice and should work. It's definitely not easy to train and might take a while but will be worth it.

Although I wouldn't feed his meals in the carrier, just reinforce with treats.

My dog walker just told me she’s moving and I don’t know of anyone else who provides dog walking services in my neighborhood.
