Anyone have an awkward moment when a colleague in a different practice group realizes you are part of an ID practice group and immediately makes an insinuating comment that they are better than you?

I left ID over 5 years ago and work in biglaw now doing complex lit, but I just had a search firm recruiter end a screener call abruptly when she found out I had done ID work for like 9 months at my first firm. She was an ex v5 partner so the arrogance was strong with that one. And it was even written on my damn resume! If you work in ID and don’t like it, try to get out. If you like it, keep doing it! And for the rest of us - nobody gains anything by talking down to someone. ID and other practice areas rarely cross paths anyway so other than stroking ego there’s no point in passing judgment.

This is so strange to hear. We have a few partners at my firm that started in ID. And we always look favorably on that kind of early experience. There is just no way to replicate the litigation management skills that ID associates gain. We know that most people in ID are having their souls slowly sucked away, so we don't really care about the prestige of the cases. Just the caseload, depos, first chair trial experience, discovery, etc. I mean, new practice areas are much easier to learn on the fly than litigation management in our experience.

Say what you want about ID, but ID practitioners know how to litigate and litigate matters at the trial and appellate levels that culminate in influential case law affecting areas of tort and civil procedure.

Don't know why, but billable rates at MedMal firms are among the lowest - even lower than general civil lit - but I knew some very smart MedMal defense lawyers with a real passion for what they were doing.

Do forgive me, but what is an ID practice group? I’m not being snarky, I actually don’t know.

PGC, that pretty much sums up why ID lawyers have a bad rap. Glad you were at least able to work in a nap.

I didn’t realize the bad rep ID work has until a recruiter told me not to mention that I worked as a paralegal for a ID/Med Mal firm before going to law school.

I think there’s many levels of ID work. Even some of the most complex litigation could technically be called ID because, in this day and age, companies have insurance for virtually everything.

Thanks and agreed. I handle mass torts in jurisdictions across the country. Complex cases with high verdict potentials, but insurers pay my clients bills for the most part which is apparently looked down on by some.

I work in ID and sometimes encounter big law firms that do what could be ID (for them, maybe just defense) but it feels like they are doing it on the down-low—like they do not advertise the fact that they do ID and they do not want to do too much of it.

A lot of biglaw firms do ID work in the EPLI context but they tend to try and take very few of those cases

Are there any workout classes that help you bulk up? Or is the only way to gain a lot of muscle is to lift heavy weights/consume a lot of calories/protein. I enjoy workout classes but feel like I always lose weight taking them and I have a hard time focusing at the gym on my own. Not sure if hiring a trainer is the best option in this case

Anyone dealt with your sibling getting divorced and the SIL fallout? My brother is going though a divorce and it is ugly. She is saying he is “unfit” (he is not). He has a 32 yr old who I am very close to, and a 12 yr old who is my goddaughter. His ex was my bff and now she says he is an unfit father and trying to take away his parental rights. I am stunned. It has fractured us beyond what I thought possible. Do I stay neutral for the nieces? Do I shout at the top of my lungs he is a good guy?
