Think hard before moving. I had the exact same background as you before transitioning into consulting. Mixed bag so far. The skillset in consulting is very different and your technical skills aren't as valued as you may think.

Thanks! How did you make the transition? we are struggling to figure out the best strategy to determine next move. This is for my partner who isn’t eligible for FB :)

The obvious is network both inside and outside their current firm.

Be the go to guy to represent the team to the rest of the company. Look for ops to engage clinical and commercial, as that is where most of the consulting action is. It will help them figure out what consulting they want to do, what their value add is (it is no longer a sterling publication record), and how is consulting for their firm. Then try to engage those consultants to show you are smart and want to learn.

Honestly almost the only thing I took to consulting from my PhD is the ability to speak doctor and read the literature. You have to learn every else over again.

like

I would network with small firms. But note that some offer very different services: commercial, regulatory, competitive intelligence, r&d. Etc

Joined consulting post-MBA, mostly worked in Bain PEG, including a few value creation projects, mostly growth stage. I love this and want to do it as a job all the time. Currently plan to stay in PEG forever, but sometimes I think I might like to be an operating partner in a smallish growth fund (no interest in deal team). Are lateral options down the track (don't want to start as assoc again) possible, and if so how? Am female if relevant - pre-MBA hard technical & middle-mgmt exp in software

Can anyone give me insight on how important it is to like your practice area? I finished up a clerkship in 2020 when then market was terrible and felt pressure to take the first job I was offered. It was in litigation, which I wanted, but it’s also construction law which I am finding to be majorly boring. I’m 7 months in and not very happy and I’m wondering if that’s why? (It could also be the low salary, the billable hours, the intangible but definitely present boys club, etc).

Really considering just leaving my job. Have only been here 3 months but just burnt out from banking and this has been worse than banking in some ways. Mainly think it’s just time to make a lifestyle move. Not sure who to ask about leaving without having another job. Maybe a career coach?

I'm a twenty year B4 vet on the administrative side with the "golden handcuffs" of a relatively decent salary and benefits locked on. Yet I am ready to GTFO with all the changes in the past year, and still have more than a few years until retirement. Since jobs anywhere else will require a salary cut, how much of a cut would you be willing to accept? 10%, 20%, 50%? Just curious to see what others think.

The Americas are changing. I wonder if the change will last.

Chile voted to rewrite their constution to create a more egalitarian one.

Bolivia was able to vote out the Right Wing party that took power last year through a coup.

The US now kicked Trump after one term, as votes continue to come in it seems the gap may get as big as polls showed.

We might see a push for more egalitarian continents soon. Gives me hope.
