Think hard before moving. I had the exact same background as you before transitioning into consulting. Mixed bag so far. The skillset in consulting is very different and your technical skills aren't as valued as you may think.
Thanks! How did you make the transition? we are struggling to figure out the best strategy to determine next move. This is for my partner who isn’t eligible for FB :)
The obvious is network both inside and outside their current firm.
Be the go to guy to represent the team to the rest of the company. Look for ops to engage clinical and commercial, as that is where most of the consulting action is. It will help them figure out what consulting they want to do, what their value add is (it is no longer a sterling publication record), and how is consulting for their firm. Then try to engage those consultants to show you are smart and want to learn.
Honestly almost the only thing I took to consulting from my PhD is the ability to speak doctor and read the literature. You have to learn every else over again.
I would network with small firms. But note that some offer very different services: commercial, regulatory, competitive intelligence, r&d. Etc
