Day to day work = Fairly interesting since you have more clients usually across a diverse set of industries. Get to work with CEO and other c-level executives. Boredom is not one of the problems.
Exit options = IMO one of the best among legal practice areas. Lots of in-house opportunities at startups, funds, and more mature tech companies. Fairly portable book and low barriers to start your own practice, since you don’t need a giant team and startups are more often willing to work with a non-biglaw firm. ECVC lawyers sometimes make the pivot to business-focused operational roles.
Work-life balance = Depends. Managing startup M&A and venture financing work can be pretty brutal if you have no control over your schedule or if not planned well. And it’s not the easiest thing to swap out with another attorney and take a vacation. But overall work-life balance can be pretty good if that’s your goal - plenty of ECVC firms out there that focus on WLB if you’re willing to take a pay cut.
Depends on the candidate. If you’re switching practice areas, it sometimes helps if you have experience in a practice that they’re temporarily short on like M&A or capital markets, but you have to be careful that it doesn’t end up being a permanent tour of duty. Otherwise, it’s more about fit - do they think you want to work hard, want to build a career there, will be easy to manage and slot in, etc. Having a strong connection to someone who is a solid performer at the target firm goes a long way. If you’re trying to upgrade from a smaller firm in a similar practice, the big hurdle is convincing that you have what it takes to perform at the highest levels. And in all cases, the narrative for why you’re switching matters - everyone likes a compelling story.

Following. Also in niche transactional group but am attracted to the idea of tech and ECVC, even if it means longer hours.
