I grew up in Austin and went to school in San Marcos (between Austin and New Braunsfels). I think it’s safe, albeit pretty vanilla. Austin is more liberal than the rest of Texas, but also has a smaller black population. If you’re used to and interested in a diverse group of friends you’ll feel comfortable there. New Braunfels is pretty conservative, I cannot speak to the safety aspect, but I think overall it probably is fine.
Agreed on Austin, and have family in SA; whenever I visit, I get similar vibes to Arizona, in that, as an AA, the racism and issues are more centered on interactions between everyone else and Latinx than on us... it's a weird, but sometimes comforting, middle ground.
The food scenes in both are on point
I moved to Austin about 4 years ago and I absolutely do not recommend. San Antonio is better for us in my opinion. It is actually as diverse as Austin claims to be.
Personally, I’m moving to Houston.
Sorry you had a bad experience,A2, but not surprised to hear. I’m a native Austinite but based in metro Dallas, and would only think to recommend Dallas, Houston, or maybe San Antonio (although out representation is lighter there than Dallas or Houston)
I’m also an Austin native. Grew up there in the 90s and 00s. It was a truly horrible experience-only place I’ve been called the n-word to my face. And before you ask, yes, my family is Texas natives from way back.
While it has changed some since I was growing up in terms of good areas to live, if you want to live in metro Austin, target nice parts of Round Rock or North Austin (e.g., the Domain and surrounding areas). There tend to be more black people in those areas. I would not do Georgetown (although my god uncle lives there; so parts may be fine).
While I haven’t lived in San Antonio, I have extended family who is there. I’ve heard the fact that it is a military town can make people a little more respectful of difference.
I live in Houston and visit Austin and San Antonio often. I would suggest Houston if not San Antonio. I feel safe in both of those markets and they’re really diverse.
Hmmm I’d avoid NB and pick Austin or San Antonio. Austin is just more expensive than SA but more funky especially if you are young.
Hmmm a black guy - German influence? Why? For me I want to live in a place where I will often see other black people. I’m African so I also have to find African restaurants. I live in Dallas. And I love it here. If I was to move elsewhere in TX, I’d move to houston first then Austin then San Antonio. I will avoid moving to any small TX towns. Visiting small TX town is fun but I will never live there.
Also remember that Trump won TX. Mostly those small towns in TX are big trump supporters.
I am from Houston and have lived in both Houston and Austin and visited SA. Austin is great. It is the blue spot in a red state. There are lots of allies and few plastic straws bc, the environment. Always felt safe but remember you are in a city and you will run into small minded people.
As far as SA. It's great if you want to learn Spanish.
Thank you all for the information. Truly appreciate it
Lived in both San Antonio and Austin and felt pretty safe. Be in the area for about 3 years. The city vibes are different though so it’ll depend on what you are looking for
