Anyone have any professional development/leadership books they’d recommend? Doesn’t have to be lawyer or in-house related specifically, just something you found helpful. I just finished Deep Work and found some aspects helpful, but others not applicable to in-house counsel life.

I have a question for the sales managers out there.

What motivated you to pursue a career change from front line sales to managing a team of sales professionals?

I ask, because as I look to the future I am wondering if just staying on the front lines will be more lucrative then entering management.

I've decided to leave public for an Accounting Manager position in private. What are the different types of companies to consider and the pros/cons? What are the best ways to get the position? I'm leaning toward GL accounting at a publicly-traded company. My background is 3.5 years audit and 2.5 years technical accounting advisory.

I work at a preschool that redirects disruptive students by giving them a book to calm down and regroup. Do you think this is a good practice or does it ultimately lead the student to see reading as punishment?

Moving on from Hotels (Hospitality)?

I’ve been thinking about this for awhile now, but it is very to commit to actually accept a new job offer since I really do love my job. My only complaint is, the pay vs workload is very small. I’m a manager now and my property offered me a director position… but the salary is still low! To make six figures, it’ll take another 5-6 years to grind it out.

I work with great people. Really can’t say anything bad about my firm in general either. But…I still dislike the entire premise of law firm life, the billable hour, etc.. I’d love to work in a law school setting as a counselor or something but I can’t afford the pay cut. *sigh* Does anyone feel like being a lawyer is just doing homework all day? I do sales for a major engineering firm. Focused on new business and exploring new markets. Last year I was in the top 50% for order intake, and first in number of projects won along with number of new customers. I think this is extraordinary given the effort it takes to win new business.

For next year my goal increased by 2.5X, and less of what I bring in counts towards that target. I really enjoy my job but I will essentially be getting a large pay cut. Lost in what to do besides quit??

I am a developer with 4.7 yrs in IT & have worked as .Net & presently as Salesforce Developer in my career, my ctc is 9.5LPA.
How can i shape my career hierarchy to reach at good level with yoe i have. I see my juniors with just 2yoe earning more than my ctc. What is the market like for entry level data scientists/ data analyst. I have a graduate certificate in data science and have spent the last 27 years as a mainframe dev so I have great SQL skills.

I have 32k miles with THY that are about to expire. Normally I'd go ahead and book a flight, but I can't project which countries might be locked down again 5-6 months from now (haven't accrued enough PTO to travel in near future). The only other way to keep the miles is to pay $10 per 1000 miles, as far as I know. Are there other strategies?

Is anyone else facing the brunt of working in a service based company and trying to move to a startup product company being dragged down by the 90 days notice period.

I have had a couple of interviews with good startup product companies where the main issue is my 90 days of notice period. Most startups simply run away at the mention of 90 days NP.

Even established product companies shy away at this. Has anyone recently switched despite this long a notice period?

For in-house counsel roles, does firm prestige matter? For example, would the fact that an applicant is from Sullivan & Cromwell vs, say, White & Case matter at all, or is it much more about experience/interview? Outside counsel has been prepping company witnesses for a trial in August. It is my subject area so I am supervising outside counsel. I did not, however, choose the counsel. He is doing a really awful job. Co counsel is better, but not great either. Higher ups love the firm… I do not want to micromanage, but I have genuine concerns about outside counsel’s ability to try this case. What would be a reasonable base salary for an in-house senior/managing counsel role? 10 YOE, SaaS with about 500 employees. Located in Los Angeles.

Would love some advice / thoughts. I went straight from law school to a corporate legal department in house for an asset manager. They like “home grown” talent and I “be worked hard and risen relatively quickly (AGC in 9 years). I work hard and get a lot of complicated deals done (structured products and private funds). I can’t shake certain people (in compliance department mainly) thinking I don’t have enough experience to do what I do because I didn’t come from a law firm. Any advice?

It’s Thanksgiving Eve, I just finished critical pending work at 10pm, and flipping through my emails, I find a request from 4pm for a vendor contract “every day counts, very urgent, pls do immediately.” How do I respond? I’m traveling at 9am, so I need to sleep and pack tonight. Do I take 2 hours out of Thanksgiving tomorrow? Try to get it in tonight? Tell them to pound sand until Friday/Monday?

How do I get signatories to fill in their company name correctly on a DocuSign PowerForm NDA? I’m not allowed to reach out to people in advance and prepare customized NDAs for them, because “everyone is automated” and “that’s too slow and causes too much work for them.” I moved the signatory info to the signature block and made a “Full Legal Name of Entity you Represent” line, but people still screw it up and I’m getting blamed. WTF do I do?

When I moved in-house a year ago as a BigLaw mid-level, I took a 45% pay cut, far more than I was comfortable with (although I was fine with a 20-30% cut). I took the job because it was a great role and I was focused on making the jump in house and developing the skills I wanted, which required me moving away from my firm practice area. Now that my year-end review is coming up, how do I ask my company for a significant pay raise (not just a 2-5% inflation-matching raise)?
