I would re-frame this as an opportunity to foster an environment that welcomes diverse points of view. Less about the politics and more about what’s going on in the world and how it affects your employees. It’s fairly antiquated to think that what’s going on in the world outside the 4 walls of your business should have no impact within those 4 walls (example: Covid). Attempting to control it or minimize it often results in a culture that squashes authenticity or candid conversations. Focus on building inclusion principles and respect for differences, that will buIld a more sustainable and resilient culture.
I would make the "politics-free zone" a part of standard office policy. The conversations aren't exactly constructive or helpful at work unless you happen to be working in a political campaign.
Isn't that kind of like censoring free speech?
Very good point.
I personally would not try and police the speech of people at work unless they're actually legally innapropriate. If people find out things about each other that make the workplace less "fun," so be it. They're going to have to continue to work together or move on. I wouldn't do anything honestly, and I wouldn't expect them to Severance themselves while they're at work and forget about real life.
