Anyone have experience transferring out an Ed jones cignam 529 plan? The local office said I need to open an Am funds 529, complete a transfer, and then move it to where we want to go. seems odd to me

Yeah. That’s the right advice.
Jones does all their own record keeping on those plans so even thought it’s sponsored by Am funds and through Virginia, you have to jump through an additional hoop to get it out of there.
Or you can just do an NAV transfer to a handful of other companies (Franklin, ishares, BlackRock, Hartford, etc)

That is correct ... it’s a pain.
Open 529 at the firm, transfer assets to the 529 company, then transfer into your firm.
The 529 at EJ is owned by then so it’s a two step process.

Our annual reviews are approaching & one of my direct reports has been with us for almost six years w/ little growth. My reco was to let him go & find a stronger, hungrier & more motivated designer at the same level. However, my boss instead wants us to promote him in hopes that will spark some motivation. I am not behind this decision & have voiced my multitude of concerns in promoting an employee who doesn't deserve it. HR is behind the decision! Thoughts on promoting an undeserving report?

Unpopular opinion but reality.
It doesn’t matter if you are the best version of yourself, if you work constantly every day to be the best, towards yourself and others. You need someone to give you a chance to prove that to them. You can be the best damn candidate for a job but if they don’t give you a chance to interview, it doesn’t mean a damn thing.

I've done so well in this new role within the company that they are hiring another person to assist with what I do. I've voiced to my boss that I'd like to manage this department and they indicated that this is the thought for the future. Now they are asking me to train this person while I have my plate full. Is it wrong for me to expect either a promotion or to be paid to train this person?

One of the hardest things to do in business and in sales is to have someone love what you do so much that they'll put their name on the line and refer you business.

That's a relationship you have to nurture.

And I bet that most of you have more than a handful of happy customers who would refer you business. The easiest way to get more leads and pipeline is to ask for referrals.

In honor of National Voter Registration Day, The New Yorker released the transcript of a previously unpublished interview with James Baldwin, who gave a first-hand account of "Freedom Day 1963," a Black voter-registration drive in Selma, Alabama. Baldwin's descriptions from that day are so vivid and detailed that you can feel the fear and anger of the event. If you have a couple of minutes, I highly recommend you read it.

Felt like today was a good day to open something new (to me).
