Huh? These are not fake. I definitely had a deep cleaning done after I ended up with some gum line inflammation and issues that were definitely from lack of diligence in flossing. I’d also been living overseas in a remote area and not gotten my usual 6 months cleanings for a bit. Further, in the trifecta of shitty dental stuff, I’m genetically “gifted” with saliva that leaves me more cavity prone because of its corrosive properties (more common than you think apparently!). Dentist here was able to show me real evidence of the issues in my mouth. They did the deep clean and she was very gentle. It was time consuming but not overly painful with the numbing. **It’s about literally cleaning underneath your gum line**. It’s not at all the same as a regular clean/polish that you get. I don’t remember any particularly large payment and my dental insurance is no different than any other big consulting firm’s coverage. My inflammation resolved really well and I no longer had so much irritation and gum bleeding. Since I had the deep cleaning I’m eligible for follow up regular cleanings every 4 months instead of 6 (per insurance and dentist) for a period of time as maintenance. Hopefully I’d never need it again but I’d do it in a heart beat if I found my mouth back in that condition. The dentist is also a close friend of mine and she’s too ethical to be hocking some “made up” deep cleaning when not needed.

Wasn’t severe enough of a problem to need a specialist. My dentist is co-lo’d with a perio so they definitely would have referred if needed. Would have cost more I’m sure too.

I had a gross debridement this year after not going to the dentist for too long (I know, I know). If not the same, it's at least similar. I definitely needed it. Try looking at the back or your teeth and gum line. Is there a lot of build up? The do it! I couldn't believe the difference after. And she used an ultrasonic thing so no pain or scraping Teeth felt amazing and gum inflammation went down so fast! I'm now flossing regularly so hopefully won't need another one (though I still hate the electric toothbrush they suggested).

99% you dont need it.

I’ve heard this is usually a scam. I would see if you can get another opinion.

like

A1. I agree with that. IIMO that high of a price tag makes me think it's a big enough issue that I would be going to a periodontist for treatment or at least a second opinion. My dentist has been watching an erosion area on x-rays for years and always says it's good 🤞. If he ever said expensive work needed to be done, I'd still get a second opinion.

like

It's likely not 100% necessary. Dentists nowadays have gotten pretty savvy about looking at your insurance and understanding what's covered. If they're proposing it, it's likely covered for you. Source: my dad is a dentist who recently sold his practice and the people who bought it are on top of these type of things. My dad tended not to push services as much.

I have the same story- plus it depends on the feedback you get from your hygienist and how often you get your teeth cleaned. If you go every couple years and you know you’re not up on the recommendations, then you should probably heed their advice on services.

I would ask them what specifically will be done and the impact. Also you should definitely be flossing atleast once a day so your not getting gingivitis

like

It helped my teeth when I got it. It’s a way for the dentist to get further down under the gum to clean. They numbed me and did it over two sessions (one side at a time)

like

The deep cleaning helped.my teeth I think, but I was told.regualr cleaning every three months some sort of gum detoriation. I also hadnt got a cleaning for 4 years

like

Also start flossing daily

I have sensitive gums and had receding gum line a few years ago. I suggest using waterpik flosser if flossing is not for you — changed my life.

like

I had a deep cleaning years ago. Felt super clean afterwards. Not much pain with the numbing. They just go deeper into the gums. Less bleeding when i floss now and no other dentist has suggested i get a deep cleaning since then. I recommend it. Non-invasive.

Thanks everyone for the insights this was really helpful. I have a waterpick but it hides on the shelf so I’ll bring that guy back out. I’m also not against it if it’s helpful (in the same way i love facials but are they necessary...no). I just hadn’t heard of this before and was wary it was financial game. I consulted another dentist (albeit remote) who says it’s not necessary. But I think I may still consider given some of these success stories. Also, the coconut oil pulling is new to me - super interesting!

like

No opinions on the deep clean because I've never had one but the Listerine Ultraclean access flosser changed mine and my SOs flossing habits completely. It's on a long handle so I'm not drooling all over my hands with the string, and you kindof bite down a little to have it get between your teeth. Also it takes less than 30 seconds to get through your whole mouth. So much more convenient than normal floss or a water pick.

likehelpful

Yes. And since I never floss I believed them and parted with a large amount of change. Get another opinion.

like

Never heard of this. Unless you're being referred to a periodontist, I would think a regular cleaning is fine.

like

Most likely unnecessary; I got a second opinion that said I didn’t need it

like

I did once and my teeth hurt for a week

like

You could try oil pulling with coconut oil daily. I do this and my dentist wouldn’t stop mentioning how great my teeth and gums look. I used to have a ton of cavities.

like

A water pick is better than flossing in my opinion. I can get more out (cleaned) with my water pick. My dentist gives me an A+ on my teeth/gums report for the part 4 yrs.

like

If you are a weekly flosser, chances are you need it. I floss every day and when I went to my dental cleaning after 1 year of not going (you’re supposed to go every 6 months), there was still some buildup and gum bleeding. There is likely a buildup underneath the gums and just because you might not see it, it doesn’t mean it’s not there and progressing to gingivitis.

Some companies add Retirals like Employer PF, Gratuity along with Insurance, furniture allowance as part of your CTC. Others don't. Sone also have higher variable package. So when you do a CTC delta you may get a 20% hike but when you discount the above things you will fall short and may end up making less. So choose wisely.
