Anyone have experience with using PTO in excess of what they have available (aka “PTO debt”)? I have a health problem and my RM told me I can go into PTO debt for the 2 weeks I need. Thoughts?

Short term disability at Deloitte is simple, and as mentioned above, 100% of your salary for a substantial amount of time. Not sure about the lesser firms, but at Deloitte we care about your well being.

If they're letting you go into PTO debt, do it. Pretty sure short term disability doesn't pay 100% of your salary. For what it's worth though, if you do go on disability I think all your doctor needs to disclose to hr is their medical opinion about the need to be off work and your readiness to return, not the details of what's up. Good luck, OP

I vote short term disability. You use 5 days worth of PTO, but then you’re covered for 100% of your salary for 3 months, then I believe 60% or so for another 3. Process is simple and relatively painless; the only people you send paperwork to is the leaves team.

If your RM supports then go for it.

It would be nice if they would just pay out PTO every end of year if we didn't use it

I could try to do short-term disability as well, but my understanding is that you need to exhaust your PTO before you can do that anyway and it’s a lengthy process that might not make sense for the 2 weeks of work I’ll end up missing as a result of being sick. I also would prefer not to have to provide *all* of the documentation required to support my health issue as it is a sensitive condition and I’d like to keep it close to the chest if at all possible

You can't do a mix of PTO and regular sick leave?

I’ve gone into the negative with PTO with no consequence

I know several people that got approval for PTO debt. It's probably the least invasive approach for anything up to 2 weeks. After that, I'd go short term disability

Why not take a sick leave?

If you do ST disability can you ensure that all medical paperwork needed is not retained or shared without your explicit consent? I have a condition that is very personal to me, has nothing to do with my work, and would stigmatize me for life if it was revealed to the people I work with. I have always been very careful about it and find it very upsetting that it might actually be relevant due to an unrelated condition making it part of the story. You spend your whole life trying to prove to yourself that you can define yourself and that people won’t need to find out things that shouldn’t matter and then all of a sudden something totally unrelated hits and you’re out of options. It’s really making me upset
