I worked with an attorney at the SBA last year who was just lovely, but totally overworked. She had left private practice for better WLB, but all she got was a pay cut and similarly long hours.
Yes. The pay is pretty abysmal. But it has kept me in the black when my solo litigation practice faltered this past two years
I work as an attorney advisor at the SBA in the ODA. I’m working 60 hour weeks. But everything is remote and there is very little oversight. But there’s also no real training. I work on a team but really know no one very well. It is wonderful to be able to help people who are struggling and I usually get respect. It’s a mixed bag. Consider this: the SBA increased its budget and program offerings multi fold in 2020 under very tough circumstances. It was not prepared: no fault of the agency. It hired tons of new contract temp employees. It became one of the big notable three in a disaster (FEMA and Red Cross being other two). There’s a bit of a bullseye on it now in the news. And it is always transitioning it’s program support to balance the needs of its constituents and the need for fraud detection. I think it’s done an admirable job considering. I think all of us SBA employees have done an admirable job and work very hard.
Thanks, that’s very helpful. I applied because it seems like a great position to actually help a lot of people and keep local businesses afloat. I’m just worried from the WLB perspective, I’ll be working similar hours for a lot less pay than in private practice. Thanks again for the info.
What’s SBA? Small business administration?
