I enjoyed it a lot. But you will have to have a good data skill like Alteryx. Otherwise, you will be miserable. Basically, you will have to combine client data, review and calculate the refund amount. Client data is not clean so you will have to manipulate them in a way to organize. Plus, you may have to pull and review the actual copy of invoices. I used OCR to capture the data for some cases. If you are good in tech, it would be fun. All the best.
do you do left inner or outer or righter outer joins to combine the client data?
I absolutely love sales and use tax research. Consulting and controversy engagements are really interesting work, but I found reverse audits boring. I left SALT because I couldn’t imagine doing them for the majority of my career.
We work on them heavily in my group at KPMG (SALT-indirect tax). EY 1 is right in a way, however if it’s a new client and hasn’t been combed through for issues, it can be extremely lucrative and rewarding to come up with tax positions that make one large issue a winning issue. Was there something specific you wanted to know?
Easily the best practice but barrier to entry is high. Client data is not standardized and you'll have to clean it yourself before performing your analysis. Most of the times you'll have an idea what need to be done but have to figure out the steps yourself.
I do 35-40 hrs a week. People are chill and most have been in 5-10 years. The downsize is that it's more difficult to move up if you're not great at your job, as no one is leaving.
TLDR: technical heavy, you'll enjoy it if you're a geek and like to figure things out.
