I know a few people who’ve hopped over and the biggest difference is the level of autonomy - you’re essentially a one man/woman show and drive projects from start to finish with your agency partner. There isn’t a lot of collaboration amongst team members - some love it and some miss the collaborative environment/camaraderie of an agency.
This is pretty accurate. You’re ostensibly a one person agency. Great if you’re into that; not great if you like working with others. It does create a bit of a “every person for themselves” vibe but that’s also a bit dependent on what team you’re working within.
I absolutely do not miss agency life. But it really does depend on which area of the business you support. Some are more mature than others. The great thing is that you really can chart your own path and think big. If you don’t like the role, you can easily move on to something else. Experimenting is encouraged. My team is highly collaborative where there’s crossover but the comms team is segmented to allow for us to be nimble so you will sometimes see things come up in our team meetings that you feel you should’ve been brought into but Amazon doesn’t work that way. You have to be proactive about plugging in where it matters and stay focused on your own body of work.
