That's bizarre, sounds like your managers are bad at their job. Typically we ask our entry-level folks to own part of the work, not just give them ad-hoc tasks

like

Staff 2 and I have not ever had this experience. Are projects ending, or is there another reason you’re being rolled off? If your team isn’t giving you enough work it’s partially on them but also on you. I would recommend over communicating that you need more work to the senior / manager you report to and further up to leadership as needed if you feel they aren’t taking time to find work for you, but rarely would this happen (if it does you can message it strategically and not in an accusatory way when you have convos with senior project leadership asking for work). If you usually report to one person and they’re not keeping you busy/ don’t have anything else for you, try checking in with everyone on your team to see if anyone needs help with anything. Extend your offer to anything they’re working on not just project stuff if there’s really no client work to be done. This is what will distinguish you from becoming a core member of the team and being “just another staff.” This is also how you create a strong personal brand and reputation for being reliable. Ask for work, ask insightful questions about how X Y or Z (your interests/ firm initiatives you read about) relates to the project / client, and don’t think of yourself as a staff in terms of what you’re limited to doing on a project. Be engaged and excited, even if things aren’t exciting, expressing enthusiasm to learn and do more will make you a person who people don’t want to roll off and take from project to project. If you can perform as a senior but they bill you at a staff rate then you’re golden.

That makes sense OP! I’ve onboarded some staff onto a long term project and they definitely weren’t doing these things but still complaining so we had to have some team discussions around staff expectations, cue that long post haha. If you’re doing these things you have a good business case for yourself, and it sounds like are building a good brand through your awareness. Maybe your counselor could help you gain some visibility into roles where you could take more responsibility? Also working on BD would likely land you in more of an ownership role on the project if the work is sold and you were involved.

I inadvertently became the lead on an engagement 3 months after starting due to unforeseen staffing shifts, and have been steadily staffed on projects since. I’ve never felt like I’ve been tasked with strictly busy work (even though that’s inevitable from time to time)

Yeah I’m a first year and speaking during meetings, and owning multiple work streams. Something is definitely off with that. How many people are on your team?

You ain’t “owning” multiple works teams as a first year boss. Pipe down

I was laid off from a resource management role, working with employees approaching or on the bench, working with managers to staff projects, and support functions like report creation, scheduling, etc. Roles like this are few and many large consulting firms have frozen internal hiring. Do you think it would be beneficial to get a SHRM cert? Would that help get a "talent related" HR role? Worth the money? I have a background in recruitment as well.

Need advice for resigning while on bench. I already have a start date with the new employer. Should I do a traditional two week notice or give <=1 week notice instead? My goal is to not burn bridges, but I also don’t want to get let go on the spot since I have nothing to “wrap up” besides HR tasks. I’ve read on here that sometimes they will let you go day of and pay you out for two weeks but I don’t see why any firm would do that for somebody not currently performing billable work...
