No, don't feel guilty. Do what's right for you and your family.
Any suggestions about how to navigate a potential renege offer situation?
Context: Been wanting to do PE for some time now and landed an offer at a shop across the country to start ~18 months after I initially accepted the offer. SO and I initially agreed that it was the right move, but now SO is having doubts about moving so far from family.
I’ve been keeping my eye open for more local PE roles, but they’re few and far between. There’s now 1-2 potential options that wouldn’t require such a dramatic move and am considering inquiring about those.
18 months is plenty for them to find someone else.
That’s a tough situation. I say go for it. This is a big decision for anyone and you don’t want to do something just out of guilt. If you are truly having regrets, let the company know. I think using the move/SO as a point when bringing this up with them could help. It’s certainly not ideal, but not the end of the world. They will find another employee
18 months is a really long time. What was the reason for such a long period of time between offer and start date?
That’s how PE recruiting typically works
As A1 said, lots of PE funds like to recruit super early to lock up their talent
Interesting. So what do you do for the 18 months? Keep working at a job you know you are going to leave?
What M1 said
Go for it, but be aware that if the old fund finds out they will definitely retract your offer and it may hurt your long-term brand in the (tiny) industry
Yikes
