What is your legal department’s structure? It’s time that I restructure my department of 4, about to take on two new hires and I need inspiration. Does the commercial vs corporate structure work? Do you have dedicated legal ops and what do they focus on? What are your tiers and qualifications for each? Does everyone work on the sell side? I am curious to know what works for everyone’s department.

Can you have good WLB while working in a small (<10 attorneys) legal department? I’ve only ever worked at large companies with large legal departments. I’m worried taking vacations would be hard at a very small company since there are fewer people to cover for you.

There has been a lot of coverage of these lately and they seem somewhat incapable with legal work, just wondering how others feel about the prospect of their employers implementing something like this.

Applying for some in-house M&A jobs, and a big focus is being able to run deals. I of course feel very comfortable running deals from the corporate side and managing multiple teams, but have obviously always had an army of specialists in biglaw. How does this work in house? I’m primarily thinking from a tax perspective — I likely wouldn’t be able to structure a deal (and don’t think many of my peers could either) since we always rely on a tax team, but not sure if that is an expectation.

I have to fly cross country in a few weeks. First time flying for this job (been here a year). I’m allowed to fly business if I want (im the GC). Company isn’t killing it financially right now. Price difference is about $2,500 and I’ve done coach plenty of times on this route at my old job (law firm). Would anyone say no to business class?

Pros/Cons of working in-house at a startup (non-silicon valley)?

Any insight into in-house gigs at studios/networks? Ie HBO, CBS, NBC etc? Pros and cons? Have applied for a few and have gotten some reciprocal interest but I don’t know any lawyers in this space. I need some in house opinion here. I’m currently a litigator working to move in house. I wanted some reference for time frame or if I’m being strung along. I applied in mid December, I was contacted early February. Went thru three rounds of interviews and they all went really well. Got into specifics like salary, package, even what office I might work from since they have so many. I didn’t hear from them thru March, sent a quick email to company talent acquisition person mid April.

How do I get a FAANG in-house position? Currently in-house at a publicly traded tech company, but the pay is super low. I applied to FAANG many times but never hear back. Where do I search for the positions, and how do I get their attention?

Does anyone in-house care about cover letters? I had an interview last week where the interviewer (a tech person and nonlawyer) said they found it odd that I submitted a cover letter. Aren’t they basically required? Or is this just a law firm thing?
