Yes!!! They’re great pets but a lot smarter and social than people think. My guy is litter trained and has free range of my apartment. Got him cuz I love dogs but didn’t have enough time for a dog //
A good friend of mine has a bunny. I lived with her one year when she first got the bunny. She had to potty train her, and then she would feed her 1-2 a day. No need to walk the bunny. She did eventually get a second bunny. Seemed fairly manageable. The only thing is that depending on the temperament of the bunny, h/she may not be into cuddling or physical affection like dogs. I think you can adopt a bunny from a shelter and see if you can have a couple play dates to find one that you get along with - that’s what my friend did :)
I have two house rabbits, going on 11(!) years old and they are the cutest. Keep in mind they might not snuggle; mine will let you pet them but hate being picked up. If you get two they will keep each other company, but will likely bond more to each other than to you. Go to a shelter or some PetsMart’s have ones for adoption.
I have two!!!!! They’re great!
Few downsides that come to mind:
- they have a tendency to chew on things, especially Wood and cables, so you have to bunny-proof your house/the space they hang out in
- not all of them like to be picked up. Some do, but many will get freaked out and will run away.
Positives:
- they’re adorable!!!
- they’re super quiet
- they have a lot of personality
- they will easily be litterbox trained
I’ve got two little devils! PM if you have any questions about getting bunnies. I’ve built their little box area to last a week before I have to clean it
I had one as a kid and absolutely loved it. They were a lot of fun. Very sweet and a low key pet.
Bunnies are a lot cleaner than dogs or cats. A lot easier to take care of than dogs. They are not as vocal in voicing their needs so you may need to actively look out for what would make them happier. Love having bunnies
I considered rabbits before I went with rats. Only downside there is they have short lifespans (two to three years).
Love this thread. What about smell (rabbit itself, litterbox, etc.)? Does it tend to be worse than other animals?
Rabbits themselves do not smell. If you manage the litter box well then it should not smell either. Get an air purifier next to the litter box and you should minimize the smell. The hay they eat does smell - kind of like tea - and some people could be allergic. People who visit my home are always surprised to find out I have rabbits and no unpleasant smells, I think a lot of them have memories of rabbits who were poorly caged with nobody changing their litter often or just peeing everywhere. There’s lots of information online from the House Rabbit Society about how to set up a healthy and clean environment for buns.
