We live in a county in the DC area and this committee does all kinds of events with local business leaders and community leaders. Just wondered if anyone has participated in something like this and if so how did it go?
Yes! I am involved in the one in charlotte. @D1 it's surprisingly not very politically motivated, it's more networking and economic development conversation topics. Very good group to get connected with. You will cross paths with business leaders, officials, and community organizers. One of the most powerful, fast moving places to be involved with in any community. You can make a real difference with the work that you do. You'll get invites to lots of cool events. Perfectly suited to consultant personality - the same things that make you great at your job become assets to people in the community. Go for it. You'll enjoy it.
As an example, I helped our annual business awards create a new award category for Diversity & Inclusion. The Charlotte chamber hadn't done anything like it before and it created some great awareness to discuss and decide on the criteria, and then it was so awesome to watch major corporations / small businesses in the area compete for it. I get excited about that kinda stuff!
To be a registered business I believe there are fees, but not as an individual just wanting to get involved.
I think that they're all diff. Just go and network. Will prob be a decent amount of Repubs, but that's ok
Is there a fee to join local chambers of commerce? Or do you need to be from a specific background to join? I just looked into Chicago's and it sounds like an awesome opportunity, but it doesn't give much info on criteria for membership.
Usually you don't have to pay in the YP groups, or it's way cheaper. I was in the Philly one previously. We have annual dues or something but it's not much.
Also in DC area. Checked my local chamber of commerce and meetings are only on a weekday. Too bad
