Anyone here have experience leaving a federal gov job before the obligatory 12 weeks after parental leave ends? What kind of financial penalty could I expect if I choose to do so?

Did you sign an agreement with your agency? Usually they spell out the penalty (and the potential loopholes). I know if your spouse takes a job more than 50 miles away it’s one way to get out of the agreement without repayment. Also, if you didn’t sign a service agreement, I would question how closely HR is tracking so if your manager doesn’t push the issue I would doubt it will be mentioned. I also know the government generally prorated these things so I would bet if they did come after you it wouldn’t be for the full period unless you never returned.

Can you talk to your HR department or do they not know you're leaving? Might be better than trying to guess!

I would guess they would claw back your payroll from the entire 12 weeks. If you have other opportunities, I would either a) ask to postpone your start or b) ask them to cover the cost of the salary you’ll have to return as a bonus.

Hi everyone! I’m a young professional right out of college getting into investing and personal finance management. Trying to better understand and educate myself on personal finance and investment strategies. Can someone recommend some recourses (books, podcasts, experts to follow, etc.) where it’s clearly explained for beginners? Trying to make sense of 401Ks, Roth IRAs, emergency funds etc.
Like I’m looking for someone like Dave Ramsey but for investment and money management advice.

I find myself questioning basic politeness I’ve learned since a child. Wondering what everyone else thinks. I work with an associate. She’s great. When she does good work or something I’ve asked her to do, I, of course, say “thank you!” I don’t really expect a response. She always replies “you’re welcome!” Or some variation. And for some reason, that’s awkward. Is it just me? I know in normal manners, that is the right response. Why does it sit funny?

HNY all! I have multiple rollover and traditional IRAs, as well as a solo 401k. But (since I started paying attention to this kind of thing) have always been over the income limit to start a Roth IRA. I’ve also not done much contributing in the last few years due to purchasing an apartment and saving for renovations. Cue pandemic joblessness... if married filing separately, would you say it’s a good idea to start a Roth while under the income limit, even in this climate? Any reason not to?

Our 5 month old started daycare about 5 weeks ago. We’ve already had to keep her home for 2.5 of those 5 weeks due to catching various illnesses (croup, rsv, brinchiolitis, etc). Cost aside, is this feasible / worthwhile to go thru the effort / finding the right fit, only for 4 months?
