Anyone here have experience negotiating steps with the DOD? I’m coming from the private sector and interested in learning what I need to do to start at a step 5, rather than a step1. Step 1 would be about 13k below my current base/bonus comp package and I don’t want to take such a large hit.

is it not in the job description

It’s a grade13 job and pay is standard outside of locality pay per step within that grade. You have to negotiate step increases or they just plop you at step 1. Was hoping to find someone who had done this for advice.

From my experience, they wanted to see my paystub to determine which I thought was odd but I wasn't the only person they did this too so I'm not sure if this is how they operate but I was able to skip step one and go to step 7. They called it the " fixed rate"

Gotta have proof I guess. I actually put my pay directly on my resume and left off 9k of spot bonuses I received this year so they couldn’t target my bonus as not being a major part of my salary. My thought was to say, well yes, 107k includes my bonus but it doesn’t include all my bonuses this year and this bonus is reoccurring.

They usually ask for proof of previous salary.

Typically they will ask for proof of salary if that is what you are basing the request for increase on. Shouldn’t be too difficult if you can prove taking their initial offer is a paycut

The salary compensation started off at 66,500 but was looking for the 75k range and they got back to me saying the best they can do is 68,500. They also have a 401k company match up to 9.3%. Do you think this is a solid offer for this job market?

Trying to get some salary data. I’m a 2016 grad doing global litigation in house in a major metro area (NYC/DC/SF). My salary is $182K.
