Ex-Boston here. On the PR agency side it’s generally perceived to not be as strong as NY, but sometimes I just think that’s a “NY or bust” attitude. Something I’ve seen is that the larger firms that have Boston and New York offices get into dumb turf battles so just be prepared to deal with the politics. On agency side: Mullen has won some interesting PR work in the last year so check them out. Not sure how strong RPG still is/isn’t but they used to have a strong tech roster, they were doing a lot of wearables for Samsung a few years ago. Weber has a Boston office also, not super familiar with their work in that market. There are a bunch of small, boutique PR firms - a lot of biotech focus. Agency PR scene in Boston is very small and it’s made up of a LOT of people who went to one of the 10000 schools in the city which leads to some cliquey-ness, not impossible to get around but just good to remember. A lot of strong in-house teams: Sam Adams, Adidas, and Nike all have BOS teams. Good luck! I loved living there, faults and all.
Wow thanks so much! Really informative.
Boston has some great agencies for tech and biotech if that is your thing. Yes they are going to be smaller than NYC but there will be far less corporate BS. If you are coming from a big agency in NY you may find the work to be a bit more hands on at the AM level as these agencies tend to run a leaner team. I really liked that aspect actually as you get the hours to be involved in the account. One word of caution is to avoid an office that was recently acquired by one of the big global holding companies. They tend to approach these industries through acquisition then kill everything good about the specialty shop they acquired and drive it into the ground. (I.e. MSL squiring Schwartz, PN acquiring Voce and Cone. I watched all of these thriving agencies wither down to almost nothing after the motherships took over). I believe PAN Comms is still independent and I have heard good things, Ink House seems to be growing nicely, I think Alison + Partners has a good size team there, LEWIS could be also be a good place to check out. One huge difference you will see there is how much longer people stay at the same firm. I went from NY with pretty good turnover to SF with rapid turnover and the Boston people I know tend to stay at places a very long time compared to both cities.
Our Boston team is great and has won some pretty exciting stuff this year. I believe there are openings if you want to reach out.
