It’s a bitch to park and insurance prices are annoying in the city unless you have an out-of-State residence to register the car to.
$250/month? The average manhattan garage price is $5-600/month!
Alternate side parking has changed. First of all, it’s been suspended almost every single week since covid started. And the rules have changed indefinitely, so if a sign says M/TH, it’s only Thursday that you need to move your car. That’s when ASP comes back into effect.
We’ve had a car around since April (my mom’s) in lower Manhattan, and have been doing fine.
Long term, if rules go back to normal (which they shouldn’t at this point), looking for parking is awful. Don’t know exactly how bad Williamsburg street parking is. But, yes, you pay an arm and a leg for a garage.
I live in Williamsburg and recently owned a car for a couple of years. For me, I decided it wasn’t worth it. I never used my car to go anywhere in my hood, and even times I used it to visit other parts of Brooklyn, it always ended up being a debate about whether it was worth walking to my car, navigating the traffic, and looking for parking. Plus, if I were headed to a social event, I wasn’t able to drink. Was so much easier to take an Uber or Lyft.
I did use it to take a handful of weekend trips out of the city. That’s when it came in handy the most. But ultimately I decided not having to think about alt street parking twice a week plus no longer paying for car insurance was totally worth the occasional cost of a car rental a couple times a year.
That said, a few of my friends in Williamsburg own cars and they totally love having it and use their cars frequently.
I live in Williamsburg and am a car enthusiast (Porsche owner) and I do NOT recommend parking on the street as most people seem to acknowledge “bumping” an acceptable practice to get into/out of a spot.
Check out 34 North 7th public garage as they have monthly parking for $300. Lots of luxury cars in the garage and it’s as simple as texting/calling when you want your vehicle.
Hi Porsche friend ;) Sara @LADismantler & @PorscheWomenGlobal
We have a car in the city, I live on UES. We street park it and my BF drives it to work so the alternate sides parking isn’t too tough for us. Finding parking usually takes 5-10 min (1-2 loops) however there are evenings when it does take 30-45 min just to find a spot.
In Williamsburg, I think best bet is to get a garage spot instead bc I heard parking there is really challenging. Know your parking signs like the back of your hand.
Some garages in manhattan at 250 a month
There are a couple but they’re in midtown/Times Square/Rockefeller. And they have a lot of restrictions on when you can get your car in/out.
And if OP lives in Williamsburg they’re not going to take the train or cab in/out, that kills all the savings.
I lived in Chelsea and had a very reasonable garage fee ($380/mo). Add in lease and insurance I was at approx $10k/yr. If you can afford it, it's well worth it. Wheels=freedom.
I have a small SUV in Williamsburg. We park it on the street. ASP isn’t really an issue at all, because they rarely enforce it. We consider the rare times we get tickets to just be our parking fee that month. We use it for weekend trips, golfing, etc, but almost never around town.
Golfing? Room for another? 🥺
I live in Chelsea and have a car. It’s roughly $400/month. Best way is to benchmark across 6 garages around you and try to negotiate prices down from there. Car has been pretty helpful for Costco / grocery / visiting ppl, etc.
