Other than that: you’ll have a very difficult time obtaining anything somewhat “hot” at an AD (Authorised Dealer), so if you’re in a hurry, you’ll very likely have to turn to a grey dealer.
Without previous purchases at the AD, you’ll get on a wait list which is not official, and very AD dependent (wait period can vary from weeks to never getting a call back). I’d say average wait list is about a year for a Submariner. I’ve been quoted 8 years (aka good luck) for a Daytona.
Always worth while to stop by your local AD and asking, but don’t get your hopes up.
A grey dealer is not automatically a bad thing, mind you. Basically you can walk in/buy online and get the watch immediately.
The downside is threefold: 1 you need to make sure you’re buying from a trustworthy grey (huge market of fakes and frankenwatches), 2 your husband’s name won’t be on the warranty card (warranty still valid, so it’s an emotional aspect only), 3 you’ll pay market price instead of list price. Depending on the piece this may vary from
A couple 100$ to +10.000$
A watch is usually a very personal thing, so unless you’re certain of what to get, it may be worthwhile to share the idea and decide together.
Also never hurts to look at alternative brands (not everyone wants to wear a Rolex): Omega, Zenith, IWC, Jaeger LeCoultre
Sorry, somehow must have glanced over that part. Apologies.
One thing that is likely to play in your favour is COVID and the economic backlash. This may significantly cool down the watch market.
No predictions, but it is definitely possible that waiting lists will be a thing of the past in 12-24 months
A Rolex is a very solid choice for a milestone birthday. They have bulletproof quality and sort of a timeless design that makes them a watch one could wear every day of their life and then leave to children/grandchildren.
That said, I’d test the idea on him a bit, some people don’t like that they’re so recognizable and don’t see themselves as the type of people who wear a Rolex. In which case there are very solid alternatives (a beautiful watch is a great milestone birthday present, doesn’t absolutely have to be a Rolex).
If you can get a sub or gmt will be a great piece as they retain and often increase in value over time. I had to look for a while before getting a new sub at a AD. Was lucky and convinced dealer to check in the back. It's all about building a relationship w dealer and buying history.
Have one. It’s amazing. Looking to get a second one
