Additional Posts in Asians in Consulting
Reading about one of Ghengis Khan's advisors and this paragraph describing him made me think of East Asian traits and why we may have a hard time breaking into leadership. If someone is great at being staff or a low level manager and not at shaking things up in ways that drive innovation and growth then why would anyone want to give that person more responsibility?

Currently at Bain, and it's very white... few Asians in leadership. Wondering how the bamboo ceiling in private equity compares to MBB
I’m in the accounting side of PE and my firm mostly comprises of white and Asian. One of the co managing partner is Asian (Indian). Asians are very much represented in the PE sphere. However you will find that people, regardless of race have an air of superiority about them. But working at Bain perhaps you have seen this
Thank you AA1, the Asian brotherhood caution is super insightful

There is bamboo ceiling on both sides. All about networking and getting along. It is probably more so in PE as a (smaller) handful of people determine your fate. At least in consulting, it has a broader ecosystem of evaluators

I wouldn’t say suck up, as people value opinions so as long as there is logic and reason. I assume you want to do the 2 year Associate program then? It used to be done 2 years in advance but it’s just starting now for 2022 class due to pandemic.
I did recruiting as an Asian F but self selected myself out. The Asian M experience might be different, but I faced quite a bit of racial / gender stereotypes implied during networking sessions

That’s the most important (finding a group of people you enjoy working with). Happy for you! I am in PE Ops as it felt like that was the best balance for me (comp, ownership, growth etc.)

Hot take: Bamboo ceiling only exists because we never stand up for ourselves or speak out.
Not saying we don’t get discriminated against by those in leadership because of their preconceived notion of Asians. But i also think it’s up to us to stand up and fight.
