Went from BB IB to a small HF before my current role. I think it’s a Goldilocks story where bulge firms are far too bloated and slow to enact change, but the smaller firm I was at got wrecked badly during drawdowns, and also had limited clout/pull with brokers and vendors. Overall I’d prefer to stay on the smaller side in the future, just not anything *too* small again. There’s a lot more room for personal and professional growth and you don’t feel like the proverbial cog in a wheel.

For reference - the small shop I was at was ~30 people. I liked the scrappy nature of my team and genuinely enjoyed much of my job, but when it was bad it was REALLY bad. Despite Citadel’s broader reputation, I don’t have the existential dread and job security concerns I used to have, which is great as I get older and am looking to settle down a bit.

I work for a smaller VC firm and I love how close I am with the team and the opportunities for me to be involved/get more responsibility is awesome. Also learn a ton from senior partners since I’m the only associate and I get to work with them one on one. I feel like my opinion and thoughts are truly valued.

Never had an experience at a big one though

Constantly hearing keeping money just siting in the bank isn’t a good idea and I should have my money “working for me”. So for someone who knows nothing about investing (other than having a 401k and opened a Roth recently), where to begin with investing/where else should I put my money? Stocks require caution due to independence requirements at my current firm.

Is December full of account teams going out for long boozy client lunches, congratulating themselves on the work that the creatives have bust their guts and spent countless overtime hours creating - or is this just my agency? I don’t expect a thanks, it’s my job, but this is just a bit of a slap in the face.

Does anyone have advice for working with a client with an extreme language barrier? My client is very nice but English is his second language, I don’t think he’s understanding most of what I’m saying, and he doesn’t provide any of the information I ask for. I tried to escalate this to the PM who suggest I adjust my communication style. Other than learning a second language, I’m not sure what I can do here.

Hey everyone, I have a BSc degree from a semi-target university in the United Kingdom, and I currently have around 2 years of strategy consultancy experience at a Big 4 in one of Africa's most competitive economies. I'm looking to step into consulting in Dubai/ Abu Dhabi (MBB, Tier 2, boutiques, etc.). Any referrals? Thanks

Me: I've been working 14 hr days non-stop. Employer: We've all been working hard. It's a tough time for the industry. Me: It's not sustainable and I'm burning out. I need help. Employer: Totally get it. We are understaffed so we need you to be flexible about taking on more responsibilities. Me: If I'm taking on more responsibilities, would my compensation be able to reflect that increase? Employer: It's tight this year. Economy/pandemic etc. Me: I'm leaving. Employer: *surprised pikachu face*

How tough is it to break into a FAANG PM role at mid-level if you have less prestigious experience? I have 10+ YOE in product, but some was at a tiny meh startup that fizzled out, some was in the digital wing of a large old healthcare org, and though my current role is GPM at a “name brand” tech company, it’s on the smaller side. Went to a good-but-not-Ivy school. What qualifications and experience are FAANG companies looking for when hiring mid-level PMs? Can I break in at mid-level from here?
