At the top endowments the WLB is not great, but the comp is great especially for some of the lower COL places endowments tend to be in.
The work is interesting and rewarding (philanthropic). The people are hit or miss depending on which endowment.
Pros are travel, getting to speak to a ton of top decile investors around the globe and pick their brains, and feeling good about the work you do in terms of supporting higher education.
Cons are that top endowments are leanly staffed but demanding workplaces, so hours can get really tough, compensation later in your career is low relative to other investing jobs (but still high in the grand scheme of things), and that you will probably sit through all of the meetings with incredible investment managers and think “wow, I wish I was doing what they are doing and not just talking to them about it”.
That’s my perspective after starting my career at a top endowment and eventually making it to a PE firm.
Thanks BCG! Curious how WLB and comp compares to MBB? Understand may be difficult but if you had some estimates on comp range that’d be helpful
At a top endowment analyst level should be compensated somewhere between 140K and 180K all in, mid level you start breaking into low 300s all in, senior level should be clearing 600-800K a year. CIOs obviously make a few mil a year. The compensation is much much better than MBB, but the hours are longer. At MBB people probably average 60-70 hours (maybe 80 in some of the more intense industries) and at endowments you probably average 75, with a few months around 90-100 and a few months around 40-60.
I will say that MIT may have a better WLB than typical because I think their team is a little larger than typical.
Very helpful- thank you!
