Consulting

Anyone here working in Google or Apple? What’s the work life balance like? Can I expect to work from 9-5pm and no weekend work? Btw I work 7-8 hours a day but only making 140k with 7 YOE.

Only 140K is really really bad if you have to work a stressful 7-8 hour day. You are extremely underpaid

I’m a Googler! Depends on team, but generally, WLB is fabulous! I’ve never worked weekends... I turn off my laptop at 5pm almost all days...then start work on the side hustle :)

You will be working 8 hr days at Google or Apple. Sometimes more if there’s an upcoming deadline. You should not expect to work less for more pay at either company.

You’re working 7-8 hours a day. What else do you want? You really think people at Amazon work 9-5 jobs and have weekend work??!

Consulting has high hours because you’re dealing with two company’s (or more) management. A lot of people in consulting have such an elevated sense of self importance, maybe due to the pressure of working for two bosses, but we’re certainly replceable

Very much depends. Lots of teams work 10-4 with minimal weekend work. Some teams (like mine) are more like 9-7 plus occasional later nights and the once-in-a-blue-moon weekend. We have 100,000 employees, so there's a LOT of variation. Overall though, I think there's a generally healthy work-life balance even on a team like mine.

My roommate works at google. He works 11-7 fairly consistently with occasional spikes. Definitely more cushy than consulting but you seem to have hit the jackpot already

Husband works at Apple. WLB has been a challenge for years. Benefit is the people seem to be great so if you set your boundaries, they seem to understand not to expect a response nights and weekends - but the emails, texts on the work phone etc still come and people aren’t shy about calling if they ”think” it’s necessary... which it often is not..
