I filter on Zillow to show open houses. I think it’s great to look without a realtor first if you’re unsure what your looking for. I did this to get a better scenes of what I wanted and the style I preferred. Then I made of list of wants and needs and worked with a realtor. It saved us both time!
Get a buyer's agent, OP. You don't pay them anything til you actually buy a house, and they get paid out of the sale price. There's zero downside. And they know what to look out for and can help you find things you wouldn't find on your own.

Get redfin, OP. They'll show you open houses and you can schedule tours as well.

Thanks will check out!!
Get a broker. It costs you nothing and will likely save you money. Would also recommend working with a mortgage team that regularly does business with your broker if it makes sense financially. We had such a smooth process and our broker was by far the most competitive pricing. Sign to close in 21 days.
I thought all open houses were suspended due to covid and that an appointment is required (usually through agent) along with forms pertaining to covid. Tour times may be limited to 15 mins depending on demand. Did something change recently?
You need to lokk outside your NYC bubble.
Use it to your advantage. You can use the sellers broker as your broker. This way you will have a greater chance to get the house. Of course do your own research and don't pass on house inspection, etc.

If you use the sellers broker it is almost certain you will have no grounds for negotiation. Also, you have no one to guide you through the sellers broker’s BS or to help ensure you are getting factual information.

Zillow and Redfin but I’d recco getting a broker because properties move so fast these days you need to be prepared to make an offer if you like something.

Yes, you can just drive around and find them and pop in. Or look online or in the paper and search them out and just walk right in!
In this marketplace, in our region, there are virtually no open houses. The housing market is up 25-30%, houses are being bought, with cash, within 1 day of being on the market. People are buying homes without even seeing them in person! Good luck- Its a tough market in a desirable location.

There aren’t a lot of open houses these days because of covid, more appointment viewing.
There are always open houses by appointment. I've been to far too many at this point. :(
Get a buyers agent! The seller pays their commission (I’m in FL, assuming is the same for all states) and they have access to the MLS which is better updated than all the other websites.

Research and get the broker in your area that is the best. Look for “president circle” or other honors. The industry is one of favors and influence and, as a buyer, you get that for free (not that good brokers charge any more than bad ones).
Do not just call or fill out a form and get assigned a broker from Redfin. You will get better info and see better properties in a tight market from the established brokers.
(Mine sent me floorplans and pics of houses coming on the market, I toured houses before they were on the market, I inspected my house before the actual open house and when seller wanted to go with another offer due to timing, she let us know the issue (close in 3 weeks) and we were able to counter. When we worked with a smaller firm for a year prior to this we never even heard back from bids.)
Zillow or similar
If you don’t have a realtor, you’re not going to find a house. A lot of times the showings are all booked already prior the house even hitting the market. You’re realtor will have access to the listings “coming soon”. If you wait til they hit the market then you’re already a step behind. Also get pre approved so the sellers will take you more seriously (there will most likely be multiple offers on any house you look at) it’s a crazy time. Good luck!
That being said, open houses are good if you’re just starting to look and are not serious about buying yet and just getting a feel for the areas.

Google “Internet.” There are a lot of great tools in there.
