Anyone in BigLaw given critical feedback to a very difficult partner and experienced a successful outcome? For context, there’s a partner (in M&A) who gives cryptic instructions, expects way too much from lawyers, doesn’t like making calls on difficult decisions, is not responsive to clients, etc. The partner is a rainmaker. Is it worth giving this feedback and ask for things to change, or should I just leave lol?

The only context I can see it making sense to provide such feedback is an exit interview if you’re fine burning some bridges. My guess is that everyone in a position to care or do something already knows about these issues.

The rainmaker part makes it impossible. Why do you need to leave? Is he your only partner?

Got it. Every firm and every group has at least one partner that you’ll hate working with, and you’ll have to work with them anyway. You’ll survive!!

What do you think is a reasonable % of revenue to ask for from a billable rate? I work part time (~5 hours / week) for a company where they bill $250 and hour for mine time. I’d assume my costs as an employee are minimal. What do you think would be an appropriate hourly rate?

I’m in L&E and want to develop business but am still in a spot where most people who reach out are old classmates likely looking for free legal advice (e.g., question about their employment agreement). How do you all respond to messages asking to set up a call?

For my latest email like this, my current plan is to respond asking for the parties’ names to run a soft conflicts check, and I was thinking about including my hourly rate to make it clear it’s not free. Any tips?

Man this Bowl is filled with some angry mid-levels. We get it, this job was hard for you, but it is for juniors now, too. Stop punching down.

I don’t think the juniors are entitled, they just want to share in their firms’ wealth. Surely any salary increases for the Classes of 2019, 2020, and 2021 would easily pay for themselves through billable hours.

My assistant gets visibly overwhelmed by basic tasks like printing or filing. She gets upset when we ask her to help with scheduling or answer phones during meetings. She will respond that simple assignments are “too hard.” At this point, I’m not sure what she thinks her job is. She is assigned to me and a partner, but it’s the same for both of us. She has worked with the partner since he was a first year so he has accepted it. Is there anything that I can do as an associate?

Had an argument with a partner last night.

He wanted me to prepare a presentation he was going to hold on recent developments in the law within our field.

I asked him whether I was going to make the presentation that he was going to hold by himself and in his own name only, and he said yes.

I then said that either we hold it together and I get to speak just a little or at least stand there, or he does it himself.

So fed up with satisfying narcissists.

Probably a dumb question, but when submitting my two week notice, who is the proper person(s) to send it to?

In the corporate world you (generally) have 1 boss, but in BigLaw I have a subgroup chair, practice group chair, partner in charge of my office (not in my PG), office manager, practice group development manager, and no less than 10 additional equity partners I do work for...

The only thing prestigious about big law is the money. They do not train you to become a good lawyer. They train you to become another cog in the wheel. Do as you’re told and only that. Never think too far ahead. Do all the work and let the partner take credit but also get your reputation up so you can attract your own clients… My days here are numbered. That coupled with 6 years who have never handled an oral argument? Insanity….
