I fostered a cat and it was great until I had to give him up for adoption. Win win for you and shelter, and cats don’t bond toooo hard 🥲 I could even drop him back off to the shelter he was from for the weekend if travelling - was like free pet sitter.
I almost had the option to foster this week but had to give it up due to interviews :(
Ignore all the cat haters in here! I type this as my cat lays in my lap while I work. Yes all cats different but so are dogs. I got a cat in February 2021 and have loved every minute of it. Cats are great emotional support (especially if you work from home and live alone like I do) and are super low maintenance. They are the perfect amount of cuddly and sweet as well as independent. They are loyal as well, they may just not show it as much as dogs. If you are financially able and feel responsible enough I would 100% recommend. The only main responsibilities are feeding, cleaning the litter box, and vet visits - way less than a dog and cheaper. Truly my cat has changed my life for the better and I am so grateful fort the companionship! I get to love on her but I’m not stuck having to entertain her all day like a dog. Some of my coworkers have dogs and complain about having to take them out so much during the day, the dog being rambunctious during meetings, peeing everywhere, and destroying stuff. Versus a cat playing a little and sleeping 90% of the day. I’m also convinced people who don’t like cats have control issues lol
TLDR: cats are amazing, low maintenance, great companions and the right amount of independent. I’ve had cats for most of my life, feel free to DM if you have any questions.
Same dog nutters are control freaks
I’ve never seen a cat give emotional support, only spiteful looks and general disdain
Cats give a ton of emotional support instead of slobbering barking and begging for food.

Even a Roomba would give better emotional support than a cat
My wife and I had a cat. The cat hated me. I hated her. We were both in a battle to see who'd die first so the other could have my wife to themselves.
I won and my life has been meaningless ever since.

warms laps very well. A++ would pet again. Listens really well, can’t understand what he says. A counselor or therapist is best for feelings of loneliness. Lifespan is 12 -18 years, so please consider the responsibility carefully.
nope, don’t see that changing either.
Non-cat haters only lmao.
Get one. I have a tortie that is rather low maintenance and keeps me around for the food and occasional scratch. Have someone check in once a week and got a quality fountain/feeder. She thrives
I asked the same question recently -and the answer is no. Unless you have the coin to pay for daily sitters to drop by when you’re traveling; and also that you get 2 “bonded cats”
Totally get the uneasiness. I like to think im a relatively stable human, but I was kind of a wreck the first couple times I left her alone. Once you do it enough, you get used to it and realize they appreciate the alone time too.
I only have one, but my buddies got two in their house around the same time, and it is crazy to see how different they are. More cat like and definitely a better attitude in new situations. Just a strong recommendation, but certainly not a hard and fast rule
Join the cat bowl and ask there too!
Drop that link pls
I have multiple cats, they are nice since they don’t require much. Some of my cats are awesome easy going will sleep with me at night, another is an a**hole. Idk if they give me emotional support but I do love them all lol
Cats are very social and loving! My cat was such a lil love bug. I miss her.
Can’t imagine not having a cat after getting her right before the pandemic. I’m lucky that mine is very chill and affectionate, and a very easy pet to have people check in on when traveling. You can do it, unless you’re a road warrior 52 weeks a year
I grew up with dogs but grew fond of cats in college while traveling. My partner and I talked about getting one for years but never pulled the trigger. Then the cutest little calico just showed up at our place one day looking for a bite to eat. We fed her for a week and then took her in. Best decision we ever made.
It does help that she came to us very friendly and well socialized, so I would screen for that if you can. They are incredibly sophisticated and independent little creatures. Smart, thoughtful, and astute: for some that means being a lap cat, and for others just a kitty that lurks in the shadows. Leaving them for days at a time is zero issue and just requires a big enough litter box and a deep enough food bowl.
Some may not be a big pile of golden retriever that you can dive into after a hard day, but they will be a pet that requires your love, patience, and care. Emotional support in that kind of way.
I have two cats. When I traveled I would pay for a sitter to come once a day for a 30 min visit. I would decline travel that was more frequent than twice a month (I come from boutique consulting). Anyone who says once a week or a few times a week is enough is being cruel. Cats need daily dry AND wet food (just dry is cruel as well). They also need daily play time.
From my personal experience with both pets, my advice will be to get a dog. Cats are not easily trained and are not loyal! Dogs are the opposite, easily trained and loyal to their owner! If you have the funds, go ahead. Chewy has a really great monthly subscription.
You’re post is ignorant and you’re a crazed dog nutter @Consultant 1
I’m sure the right cat could provide some emotional support but don’t expect it to be a miracle drug for you. Also, I don’t want to come off as judgmental but please make sure you consider what all is involved with having a pet. Although not as much as dogs, they still require quite a bit of attention and care and you should be prepared to provide that.
Not personally but my sister living the expat life had similar doubts a few years ago, ended up getting one, and is very clearly much happier for it. Pets are great, go for it!
I have two, both rescues. Had three at one point but one sadly passed. Cats are great, but they’re smarter and closer to wild than dogs, so it can take some time for them to warm up to you. It also does help if you get more than one since they play with each other.
Make sure they have things to scratch, high places to sit, and that your furniture is leather or otherwise not cloth. Respect when they tell you they don’t want further attention and their boundaries in general.
Cats are great. I love mine more than I love all but a couple people. When you and the cat vibe, they’re very affectionate and reasonably trainable.
I have two cats and they are largely independent which is great if you're away from home a few nights a week. A good auto feeder, big or auto cleaning litterbox, and a big gravity water fountain thing will pretty much keep them if you're gone too to three nights.
These last two years I've been home almost 24/7 and my two cats (12 and 9 years old) were excellent company. They don't need me at all really but they sleep in my office while I work and come visit me all day.
I highly recommend 1-2 cats. Ideally not kittens if you won't be at home most of the time because kittens need a lot of attention and upkeep until they're nearly a year.
I only had dogs growing up, decided somewhat abruptly and randomly (4 months of research/planning) that I wanted a cat, then had friends recommend getting two. I was so nervous before I got them because I wasn’t sure what to expect with cats, especially 2. My husband and parents thought I was crazy. 4 years later, best “impulse” I ever acted on. My cats are super affectionate and hilarious, I am obsessed and my husband is too :) I have Scottish folds so I am not sure if the breed has anything to do with personality. Knowing better now, down the road I will adopt cats and not go the breeder route, but it has worked out amazingly!! Team cats!
