How many of you stuck with the career plan you had as a first year? For example, if your plan was 3-5 years and then in-house, or to gun for partner, how many of you actually stuck to your plan, and if not, why? Curious to know why one lasted longer/shorter than planned.

Asking as a first year whose plan is to last 5-7 years and then go in-house (since my thoughts are that's when the best exits open up; interned in-house during law school and low-level corp counsel roles look rough).

I crafted a mix of goals related to contract turn-around time being under a standard time, being within approved budget, and some other measurable spend related goals and was told by executive team the goals need to be more “quantifiable” (which is a stupid criticism since these are all quantifiable/objectively measurable). Looking for other suggestions.

I went in-house at year 4 — now at year 5. I feel like my growth has stunted and I’m not learning and growing my skill set. I don’t think I was very seasoned when I went in-house, was just very burnt out from big law. Can I go back to firm life to gain more skills then go back? WLB and everything else is great.
