Anyone in-house at a media company (specifically in news)? How does the WLB compare to big law?

Not in house, but it's always going to be better than big law. Very little is worse than big law in terms of WLB. But all of my friends who have gone in house have reported that their first few weeks have been hellish because of what they've needed to learn quickly to get up to speed.

Looking for suggestions on how to break into this space.

I'm a RN who's worked in sales for 14 years within the industrial and energy spaces. Yea, I know, super random for a nurse, but I excelled greatly.

I still work weekends as a nurse and would love to combine my business acumen with my education by working for a pharma, biotech, or medical device company.

I've applied for these types of jobs and get nowhere. But when I apply to engineering organizations I get called immediately.

I feel like I’ve been stuck in this salary band for the last 5 years. In my interviewing experience, Canadian companies aren’t willing to pay more for full-time employees. Where do I go from here? What companies should I be applying to? I’d consider an MBA or masters if I could guarantee an ROI in earning potential.

In house counsel in big tech. 14 YOE. Junior manager of a small team. I've been advising senior leadership for some time and find myself more interested in business strategy than legal (or beyond legal). I also want to better understand organizational systems. I've seen continuing education business courses or legal leadership programs, but I'm wondering if an executive mba would be better. Time and cost are considerations. Anyone have experience here or programs you'd recommend? Am I crazy?

9th year and just accepted an in-house position at a client. I was really excited until I gave notice. I am now struggling quite a bit and feeling overwhelming anxiety and sadness about leaving. If I’m being honest, I am also a bit disappointed that no one has tried to get me to stay. I’m not sure why I care, though, as I won’t stay regardless of the counteroffer. Has anyone been through this? Any advice for working through my feelings about the transition?

I’m looking for encouragement and advice. I just started at my company as the Director of Compliance a little over 2 weeks ago. Three days in, my boss walks and tells me “you’re now also General Counsel.” The company is a hot mess. We’re behind on bills, we don’t have the documents that lien holders are requesting to stop foreclosure, and I just got yelled at by an IRS revenue officer. I can handle the tax work, the securities work, general corporate work, I can even (cont’d in comments)

I get into moments of extreme big law hatred and “I need to get out of here asap” and start applying for positions like crazy during. And it never fails that once a good in house position avails itself to me and I’m very far along/have an offer, things suddenly aren’t “as bad” on the big law side and then I’m left teeter tottering on what to do. Any similar experience? How did you end up choosing one or the other?

Would this be a bad time to switch positions for the purposes of career progression and higher compensation? My current position seems stable but no room for growth and also a disorganized mess, not a very mature legal department. On one hand I’m the only that knows what they’re doing on the other hand i would like to go somewhere where I can learn more how a mature legal department should operate within a legally savvy business. But seems like a risky move in this economic climate?

Tips to handle a non-legal boss that cuts you off relevant matters?

Entered to the company as its first in-house counsel

The legal issues were previously handled by the CFO with help of outside counsel. 1st year was hard because he was territorial about legal matters, but I reported directly to the board so it wasn't a true issue

2nd year: The CEO retires, and the new one decides to put me under the CFO in the organigram. Now I'm back to square one bc this guy cuts me off any relevant issue!

Third-year in BL and just had a second round of interviews for an in-house position. It was surprisingly similar to a law firm callback with no real curveballs. They mentioned that as in-house counsel, you have to answer questions that you don’t always know the answer to. Frickin, how does that work without you committing malpractice, especially if you’re still a “baby attorney”? By just using lots of qualifiers in your answer? What happens if you get it wrong (hopefully not instant termination)
