Anyone in-house attorneys ever do moonlighting with small, super part-time projects? I’ve got a couple of projects I’m working on (total 5-10 hrs/wk) and was just offered a full-time in-house role with a different company. Would like to keep the side projects which are not competitors or in the same field as the FT role. Would seek approval from all sides. Wondering how common this ask is for in-house folks?

It depends on your employee handbook, but you’ve already said you’d get approval from all sides. I think this is pretty common as long as there’s no conflict. I undertake some 1099, contract brief writing from a couple of practitioners. I personally know one other in-house attorney that moonlights as in-house counsel for another company, and have heard of other instances, too.

Great thank you for the insight.

I'm in-house as well and have quite a few co-workers who do this. They typically reach out to the lead attorney of their business group about it, who then runs it by leadership, and it's typically signed off on.

90% sure that your contract would have some provision about this.

Sure, but could possibly negotiate. Wondering if this is a common ask.

Is it out of the question to ask if I can be paid for that work under a separate fee as a consultant or something? Is that even possible?

Additional Posts in In-House Counsel

After reaching out to the general counsel on LinkedIn, I applied for an in-house job a month ago. I didn’t hear anything. A few days ago the general counsel reached out on LinkedIn and said she did not see my application in the mix but was hoping to and asked if I wanted to meet. I said I did apply, indicated I was interested in meeting, and asked if I could send my materials. She said yes and she would send me some times. I sent my materials and haven’t heard a thing. Any idea what is going on?

I a mid-level litigator and have an offer at a FAANG, however, I still have roughly $230,000 in student debt. If I can delay my start until June, I will receive the newest round of special bonuses and can make a lump sum payment of ~$50,000 (all principal with the 0%). If I decline the offer and stay with my firm, I can make another $50,000 payment at the end of the year. I ultimately want to be in house, preferably in tech. Would I be crazy to decline to use the bonuses to make big chunk pmnts?

I’ve been in an in-house role since the beginning of the year and just gave 2 weeks’ notice to leave for a much better paying and better titled position. My company historically paid base comp and bonus based on years out of law school. Level 1 is 1-9, and Level 2 is 10+. Diff if $50k+, easily. My team’s work isn’t distributed any differently based on seniority, and we’re all doing the same subject matter. We have a new GC changing it so bonus can be higher (but not lower) if you take on more work.

Do you think this is a fair system? Is it right to push for equal comp, especially given that there’s a new reward system for doing more work?
