It’s all about the bonus. As M1 mentions below, you clear closer to $200K TC when all is said and done. Obviously it depends on the year but you’re looking at bonuses that are >50% base.
K1 - Are you talking base or total comp? IB associates easily clear $200K but their bases start around $120K and the base increases with YOE. They definitely pull in more than $200K way earlier that consultants but it’s all driven by the bonus. A MBA Associate-level at MBB is around ~190K base (COVID retention raises may have increased this). A first yr MBA Associate-level in IB starts around $120K base at big five but bonus will get you closer $250K. Using the MBA “entry-level” to baseline the comparison. The progression in comp at IB is also a lot faster than consulting.
